Chapter 15 - One Clean Hit, Forever

By evening, the upscale lounge was fully alive. Warm wall lamps cast a golden glow across the red leather booths, and the low hum of conversation mingled with the smooth notes of a jazz record playing over the speakers. The broken glass and dropped whiskey bottles of a few weeks ago had long been swept away, replaced by polished mahogany and an atmosphere of effortless exclusivity.

I stood behind the central bar, wearing my crisp white button-down shirt, black pants, and apron, feeling entirely at home. Vincent was seated near the back in his usual booth, nursing a glass of bourbon, watching the room with his characteristic cool authority. But the distance between us tonight was different. It wasn't the guarded watchfulness of strangers or the wary testing of rivals; it was the quiet confidence of partners who knew they could weather any storm together.

As the midnight hour approached and the last few patrons began to clear out, Vincent stood up and walked slowly toward the bar. He tossed his dark suit jacket onto an empty stool, rolling up his sleeves to reveal his forearms and the familiar silver wristwatch.

He stopped right in front of the counter, leaning forward with a challenge in his eyes that I knew by heart.

"Still think you can land that clean hit?" Vincent asked, his voice low enough to carry just over the jazz music.

I smiled, untying my apron and tossing it onto the back shelf. I stepped out from behind the bar, stopping right in front of him near the wooden table where the whiskey bottle rested. Without a word, I raised my fists into a relaxed, balanced boxing stance, my weight centered and light on my feet.

Vincent raised his hands in a loose guard, his eyes locked onto mine with mutual respect and undeniable affection. "Show me what you've got, partner."

I feinted left, drawing his guard just enough to slip past his lead arm, and tapped a light, open-palmed blow directly against the center of his chest. It wasn't a knockout punch; it was a promise.

Vincent didn't try to block it. He just caught my wrist gently in his hand, pulling me closer until there was no distance left between us, and kissed me right there in the warm light of the lounge. The doors swung open to the quiet city outside, letting in a cool breath of night air, but for the first time in years, I wasn't looking over my shoulder. We had built our foundation from the ground up, one clean hit at a time.
