Chapter 3 - The Weight of Proof

I stared at the small silver flash drive resting on the coffee table as if it might detonate if I touched it. Evelyn stood near the window, her arms crossed over the red fabric of her dress, watching me with an expression that combined professional detachment with genuine concern.

"What is this?" I asked, my voice barely audible above the hum of the estate's central heating system.

"Insurance," Evelyn replied simply, turning her head to look out at the rain slicking the terrace below. "Your husband thinks that because he controls the foundation board, the lawyers, and the social calendar, he owns everything connected to your name. But men like him leave paper trails. Offshore accounts, corporate shell companies designed to hide marital assets, and documentation regarding the systematic isolation of his spouses. Yes, you aren't the first, though you're the first he married legally."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I sank back onto the edge of the armchair, my hand coming up to press against my throat. "Why are you doing this, Evelyn? What do you get out of risking your position with him?"

"My family built a reputation in this city on integrity, long before your husband bought his way into high society," she said, her tone hardening slightly. "I watched him ruin my sister ten years ago under the exact same playbook. I swore then that if I ever got close enough to someone else he was caging, I’d offer them a way out." She reached down and tapped the metal casing of the flash drive. "Everything you need to prove his financial coercion and emotional abuse is right there. But you have to be ready to use it."

Before I could answer, a heavy thud echoed from downstairs, followed by the muffled sound of the front door closing and heavy footsteps marching across the marble foyer. My husband was back early.

Evelyn's eyes widened slightly, and she immediately retrieved her gold clutch, slipping the flash drive back inside before pausing at the inner terrace door. "He's early. Use the service stairs at the end of the hall. Derek is waiting at the south gate with a vehicle. Don't waste this chance."

Without waiting for my reply, she slipped out onto the terrace balcony just as the bedroom door handle began to rattle. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I grabbed the heavy brass paperweight from the table, concealed it inside the pocket of my oversized cardigan, and bolted for the service corridor just as the master door clicked open.
