Chapter 1 - The Weight of Polished Marble

The air inside the grand hallway tasted of chilled champagne and expensive cologne, but to me, it felt entirely devoid of oxygen. I stared down at the polished marble floor, seeing my own distorted reflection mirrored in the glossy stone alongside the sprawling crystal chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling above. My hand rested instinctively against the heavy silk of my sparkly green gown, shielding my protruding baby bump as if the fabric alone could protect the life growing inside me. Only moments ago, Derek's hand had been warm against my chin, his dark eyes searching mine with an intensity that cut straight through the numbness I had cultivated over years of marriage.
"Get your hands away from my wife right now!"
My husband's voice echoed off the white columns, sharp and venomous, cutting through the ambient hum of the charity gala in the adjoining ballroom. I flinched, pulling my gaze away from Derek to look at the man I had legally promised to honor. My husband stood at the edge of the corridor, his black tuxedo immaculate, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. Beside him stood the blonde woman in the red strapless evening dress, her expression a careful mask of polite shock as she clutched her gold evening bag against her hip.
Derek didn't flinch. He slowly lowered his hand from my face, his shoulders squaring as he looked past my husband with quiet defiance. "She isn't yours anymore," Derek said, his voice low and steady, carrying an absolute certainty that made my breath catch in my throat.
"Derek, stop, just let it go," I pleaded, my voice trembling as I stepped between them, the tears I had fought so hard to suppress finally spilling over my lashes.
Before Derek could answer, my husband seized my elbow with a grip that bruised through the delicate capelet of my gown. "We are leaving," he hissed, his fingers digging into my arm with vicious control. "Right now. And you will keep your mouth shut about this pathetic little scene."
He hauled me down the private corridor toward the underground valet exit, ignoring the way I stumbled in my heels. The heavy glass doors swung shut behind us, cutting off the glittering lights of the hallway and plunging us into the cold night air of the private drive. The black town car was already waiting at the curb, its engine idling softly in the damp evening mist. As my husband shoved me into the leather backseat, I looked out the tinted window and caught one final glimpse of Derek standing beneath the canopy, watching us leave with a look that promised this night was only the beginning.
