Chapter 14 - Lights in the Grand Ballroom

The grand ballroom of the county hotel was a dazzling display of crystal chandeliers, polished mahogany, and high-society elegance. Yet, beneath the veneer of champagne flutes and classical string music, an electric tension hung heavy in the air. Federal marshals in discreet evening wear flanked every exit, their eyes scanning the crowd with practiced precision.
As we stepped through the double doors, every head turned. Flashbulbs from local press photographers flared in rapid succession, capturing Dominic Vale returning to public life with his twin daughters walking proudly beside him—and me, standing right beside him with my hand resting lightly in the crook of his arm.
Across the room, standing near the marble fireplace with a glass of scotch in his hand, Mr. Reed froze. His face went instantly pale as he locked eyes with Dominic. He set his glass down with a sharp clink and turned abruptly toward the side service exit, only to find two federal marshals blocking his path with federal badges displayed clearly in their lapels.
"Mr. Reed," a deep voice echoed across the silent ballroom as Director Vance stepped forward from the crowd. "You're coming with us."
The murmur of the crowd swelled into a wave of astonished gasps and whispers as the marshals escorted Reed out through the service doors in handcuffs. Judge Miller, seated at a nearby VIP table, stood up angrily, only to be met by two more federal agents holding a federal arrest warrant.
Lily and Grace cheered softly, burying their faces in my skirt with excited laughter. I knelt down, hugging them tightly before looking up to find Dominic watching us both with an expression of profound, unshakable peace.
Later that night, after the reporters had left and the ballroom had emptied out, we stood together on the grand terrace overlooking the snow-covered estate gardens bathed in moonlight. Dominic wrapped his heavy black overcoat around my shoulders, pulling me gently against his side.

"You saved us, Emily," he murmured, his lips brushing my hair in the cold winter air. "Will you stay? Not just for tonight, but for all of it?"
I looked up into his eyes, smiling as the last lingering chill of the storm faded away entirely. "I'm already home," I whispered, and kissed him as the snow began to fall softly around us.
