Chapter 12 - Shadows in the Neon Glow

The interior of Room 14 smelled of damp carpet and old pine cleaner, but it was warm enough once Dominic fired up the electric wall heater. Lily and Grace curled up on the narrow twin bed, instantly exhausted by the relentless upheaval of the past twenty-four hours. I tucked the blankets around their shoulders, brushing a stray lock of blonde hair from Grace's forehead until her breathing deepened into sleep.

When I stepped back into the cramped kitchenette area, Dominic was standing by the cracked window, staring out at the empty highway through a gap in the faded vinyl blinds. The blue neon sign outside buzzed rhythmically, casting an eerie, cold glow across his dark coat and sharp features.

"They're not far behind," Dominic said quietly, not turning around. "The deputies cleared Ray's place within five minutes of us leaving. Your uncle is moving to his secondary cabin in the hills, but our trail is hot."

I walked over to the small laminate table where the encrypted folders and Uncle Ray's flash drive rested next to a cracked ceramic coffee mug. I sat down, my hands trembling slightly as I rubbed my tired eyes.

"You didn't have to bring me into this, Dominic," I said softly, the silence of the room amplifying every word. "I was just a waitress in a diner. Now you're hunted, and I'm running with you."

Dominic turned slowly from the window. He walked over, pulling a metal folding chair close to the table and sitting down directly across from me. The distance between us vanished, the ambient hum of the neon sign the only sound in the small room.

"You didn't have to protect my girls either," Dominic replied, his voice softening, stripped of the hard edge he wore around his guards. "You gave them warmth when they were terrified. You risked your own safety in that diner. That makes you more than a bystander, Emily. You're the only reason they're safe right now."

I looked up, meeting his steady, intense gaze. The protective wall he always maintained around himself had crumbled away, leaving something raw, honest, and profoundly vulnerable.

"I'm not going anywhere, Dominic," I whispered, reaching across the table to rest my hand lightly over his knuckles.

His fingers turned, his palm pressing firmly against mine in a quiet, unbreakable promise.
