Chapter 9 - The Matriarch's Crisis

The fragile peace we had found in the study shattered by dawn. I was halfway down the grand staircase when a panicked cry echoed from the East Wing. Dr. Evans, the family physician, rushed out of the Matriarch's bedroom with a grim expression, shouting for oxygen and emergency supplies.

My heart plunged into my stomach. I broke into a run, bursting through the double doors just as Ronan arrived from the opposite corridor.

The Matriarch lay pale and rigid against her lace pillows, her breathing shallow and labored. Her fragile fingers clawed weakly at the heavy silk duvet.

"What happened?" Ronan demanded, his voice sharp enough to shatter glass as he grabbed the doctor by the lapel.

"Her heart," Dr. Evans said, struggling to remain calm. "The stress of the recent security breach... it’s triggered an acute episode. We need to stabilize her immediately, but her blood pressure is dropping too fast."

Ronan dropped the doctor and strode to the side of the bed, his face completely drained of color. He looked down at his mother, the formidable mask of control entirely stripped away, exposing the terrified son underneath.

"She was asking for you," the Matriarch's private nurse whispered, looking directly at me. "She woke up in the middle of the night talking about the falcon, and asking if Sadie had brought the final letters."

Ronan turned his head slowly, his dark eyes locking onto mine. For a fraction of a second, a flash of old paranoia flickered in his gaze—the instinct to blame me for his mother's decline. But then he saw the tear shining in my eye and the steady, resolute way I stepped forward past him to the side of the bed.

"Go," Ronan said quietly to the doctor and nurse, his voice regaining its lethal authority. "Leave us."

When the room emptied, I stepped up to the ornate armchair beside the bed, picked up the Matriarch's cold, frail hand, and pressed it gently against my cheek—mirroring the exact gesture from the night we first met.

"I'm here," I whispered, my voice trembling with controlled emotion. "I kept your son's promise. I'm not leaving."

A faint, trembling sigh escaped the Matriarch's lips. Her eyelids fluttered open, her milky gaze locking onto my face. Slowly, the frantic spike on the heart monitor began to steady into a rhythmic, even beep.
