Chapter 12 - The Syndicate Gala

Crystal chandeliers mirrored the cold brilliance of the stars overhead, casting a glittering, brittle light across the grand ballroom of the Cain mansion. Below, hundreds of invited guests—politicians, syndicate elders, and corporate magnates—mingled in expensive silks and tailored tuxedos, sipping champagne while ignorance kept them smiling. To them, it was a charity gala for marine preservation. To Ronan and me, it was a heavily guarded theater of war.
I stood near the balcony archway in a sweeping dark emerald gown, my hair swept up in a sophisticated twist that still couldn't hide the tension in my shoulders. Across the room, Julian Vance was working the perimeter, whispering poison into the ears of regional shipping directors. Every eye in the room seemed to track my movements, a strange mixture of curiosity and malice directed at the former maid who now held half the Cain empire.
"Don't give them the satisfaction of looking away," a low, gravelly voice murmured near my ear.
I turned to find Ronan standing beside me, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. His black suit was unblemished, but his eyes were sharp as broken glass, scanning the crowd for threats.
"They're whispering about the falcon tattoo," I whispered back, unconsciously rubbing my right wrist where the ink sat beneath a sheer lace sleeve. "Vance told three different councilmen that I'm an opportunist using a dead man's memory to seize power."
Before Ronan could answer, Julian Vance detached himself from the crowd and glided toward us, his wine glass catching the chandelier light. He stopped a few feet away, his smile thin and venomous.
"A remarkable transformation, Miss Cole," Vance said smoothly, raising his glass in a mock toast. "From scrubbing marble floors to dining with wolves. Tell me, does the memory of your little promise keep you warm at night, or are you just waiting for Ronan to realize you're out of your depth?"
Before I could form a sharp reply, Ronan set his glass down with a heavy, deliberate thud on a passing waiter's tray. He stepped directly into Vance's personal space, towering over the older syndicate leader with an aura of pure, suffocating menace.
"She is where she belongs, Julian," Ronan said, his voice carrying clearly across the quietening perimeter of the room. "And if I hear your tongue utter her name with disrespect again, I won't wait for a board meeting to strip your shipping routes down to the hull."
Vance's face went pale. He swallowed hard, took a slow step back, and melted back into the crowd without another word. The surrounding guests hastily looked away, the message delivered with absolute finality.

Ronan turned back to me, the harsh lines of his face softening as he looked down into my eyes. Without hesitation, he reached out, gently taking my hand in his, his thumb brushing directly over the hidden falcon tattoo on my wrist.
"Let them talk," Ronan whispered softly, his thumb tracing my pulse. "They can't touch what's mine."
