Chapter 6 - The Anonymous Donor

The cool night air on the terrace hit my flushed skin like a physical relief. Below us, the city lights stretched out in a grid of gold and neon, humming with a distant, relentless energy. I leaned against the stone balustrade, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the adrenaline of Eleanor's interrogation drained from my system. Julian stood beside me, resting his forearms on the cold stone, watching the traffic far below.

"You didn't have to do that back there," I said quietly, staring down at the ring of emerald silk pooling around my shoes. "You didn't have to claim me like that in front of your family."

"Eleanor operates on intimidation," Julian replied, his voice calm. "She smells weakness and exploits it. If you're going to stand beside me in these rooms, you have to be untouchable."

I turned my head to look at him, the amber glow from the sconces catching the sharp line of his jaw. "Why are you doing all of this, Julian? Really. People like you don't just pluck maids out of hallways and rewrite their entire lives out of the goodness of your heart."

Julian didn't answer immediately. He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a folded manila envelope, and laid it quietly on the stone ledge between us.

"Open it," he said.

I picked up the envelope, my fingers trembling slightly as I slid the flap open. Inside were copies of hospital billing statements dating back eighteen months—long before I had ever crossed paths with him in the penthouse hallway. Every single monthly invoice for Maya's metabolic treatments was stamped *Paid in Full* by an anonymous corporate foundation based out of Delaware.

I looked up at him, my breath catching in my throat. "This... this is the foundation that kept her alive before I got the job here. Who is this?"

"Look at the routing number on the bottom of the second page, Elena," Julian said softly, his eyes holding mine with an intensity that made the cool night air feel suddenly warm.

I traced my finger down the page to the bank identifier. It was a private trust account registered under a holding company that mapped directly back to Julian's personal portfolio.

"You've been paying for her medicine for a year and a half," I whispered, the words barely audible over the distant hum of the highway. "You weren't just standing in that hallway by chance, were you?"

Julian turned toward me, closing the small distance between us on the terrace. "I saw you in the lobby of the pediatric clinic eighteen months ago," he said, his voice dropping into a steady, resonant cadence. "You were crying over a denied claim while holding a sleeping toddler with a white bandage on her forehead. I didn't want to disrupt your life, so I made sure the bills were paid quietly." He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair back from my cheek. "When you walked into my penthouse hallway two days ago begging for that final payment, I realized watching from a distance had run its course."
