Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Press

The fallout from Julian’s public stand at the board meeting did not take long to reach the tabloids. By Tuesday morning, a sleek black town car was idling downstairs while I sat in the penthouse kitchen, staring at a glossy photograph spread across the morning paper. The headline screamed about corporate scandal and a mysterious maid who had captured the city’s most eligible bachelor. Someone had dug up the medical bills from County General, tracing the exact date of the $2,800 payment in the hallway. It was a calculated breach of privacy, designed to humiliate Julian and paint me as an opportunist who had trapped a wealthy benefactor.

Maya sat across from me at the marble island, innocently spooning oatmeal while wearing her pink pajamas. She pointed a sticky finger at the newspaper photo, where a blurred image of us standing outside the hospital pharmacy was splashed across the gossip column. "Look, Mama, it’s us," she chirped, completely unaware of the poison those ink-stained pages carried. I pulled the paper away quickly, folding it into a tight square and tossing it into the recycling bin. My chest ached with a cold, suffocating dread. I had fought tooth and nail to keep my daughter safe, but the thought of Julian’s reputation being dragged through the mud because of my past desperation made my stomach turn.

When Julian walked into the kitchen, his dark tailored suit was immaculate, but the shadow beneath his eyes betrayed the sleepless night he’d spent managing his public relations team. He poured a cup of black coffee, his movements deliberate and unhurried. He saw my expression, the way my shoulders were locked tight under my burgundy uniform shirt, and he set his mug down on the counter with a quiet click. "I saw the paper," I said, my voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "They’re saying you compromised the board’s trust for a staff member. They’re dragging my daughter's medical history into the public eye."

Julian walked over, stopping just inches away. He reached out, his long fingers gently catching my chin to tilt my face up toward his. His gaze was steady, anchored by an absolute, unshakable calm that instantly quieted the panic storming inside me. "Let them talk," Julian said, his voice deep and resolute. "They can write whatever headlines they want, Elena. My life, my choices, and my company belong to me, not a board of directors or a gossip columnist. We don't run from this."

"I won't let you ruin your life for mine, Julian," I whispered, pulling back just enough to break his touch. "Maybe I should take Maya and stay at my old apartment for a few weeks until this blows over." Julian’s jaw tightened, a hard muscle ticking in his cheek. He didn't raise his voice, but the intensity in his dark eyes left no room for argument. "You are not going anywhere. We face this together, or not at all."
