Chapter 2: Silence Behind the Doctor Coat

The cold marble floor bit through the thin fabric of my beige maid uniform as I kept my kneeling posture beside the high chair. The small grey baby bowl rested steady in my left hand, the silver spoon catching the amber gleam of the crystal chandeliers overhead. Across the expansive dark wood dining table, the man in the tailored black suit stood rigid, his dark slicked-back hair catching the light, his facial hair and neck tattoos accentuating the hard line of his jaw. His demand hung heavy in the warm interior air, echoing off the high ceiling.

"Then tell me who betrayed me."

Before a single muscle in his frame could shift toward me, a quiet rustle of fabric broke the heavy silence near the grand doorway. The older man in the white doctor coat stepped forward into the perimeter of the warm light, his stride measured and deliberately unhurried. He offered a small, placid smile that never quite reached his eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses.

"If I may interject, sir," the doctor began, his voice dry and professional, carrying the practiced cadence of a man used to managing domestic panic. "The child is simply repeating stray phrases from the nursery staff. At this developmental stage, mimicry lacks context. There's no need to disrupt the evening routine over an infant's echo."

My fingers tightened around the rim of the grey baby bowl, shielding the silver spoon as the toddler in the blue dress watched the exchange with unblinking curiosity. I kept my gaze fixed downward, studying the polished reflections in the stone beneath my knees, careful not to draw his attention back to the toddler or my own trembling hands.

The man in the black suit didn't look at the doctor immediately. His dark eyes remained locked on me, assessing the precise angle of my posture, the way I positioned myself between the high chair and the table. Every second stretched, filled only with the low, steady hum of the room tone and the distant tick of a grandfather clock down the hall.

"She wasn't mimicking," the man said softly, his voice dropping an octave, losing none of its bite.

The doctor took another cautious step closer, his white coat brushing against the edge of a mahogany sideboard. "Sir, medically speaking, fatigue can distort an infant's immediate environment into imagined threats. I've administered her evening drops; she requires quiet, structured surroundings, not an interrogation."

Three guards in matching black suits stood motionless by the grand doorway, their hands clasped behind their backs, their faces completely unreadable. They didn't shift their weight. They didn't look at the doctor, nor did they look at their employer. Their absolute silence felt louder than any spoken objection.

The man in the black suit turned his head slowly, fixing his gaze on the older doctor. The tension in his shoulders shifted from coiled aggression to a calculated, chilling stillness. He didn't blink. He simply let the silence stretch until the doctor's placid smile faltered at the edges, a tiny bead of sweat appearing near his temple despite the cool, climate-controlled air of the dining room.

With a sharp, dismissive gesture of his right hand, the man cut the doctor off completely.

"Step back, Doctor," the man said, his tone flat and absolute.

The doctor swallowed hard, the practiced professional mask slipping for a fraction of a second before he pulled his white coat tighter around himself. He offered a slight, stiff nod and retreated slowly toward the grand doorway, his leather-soled shoes clicking softly against the marble until he took his place just outside the perimeter of the guards.

The three guards remained rooted by the threshold, their eyes forward, tense and isolated in their unchanging posts. The man in the black suit stepped closer to the high chair, towering over my kneeling form, his shadow falling completely across the toddler's blue dress.
