Chapter 1: The Marble Floor and the Sudden Intrusion

The polished marble floor of the upscale dining room was cold against my knees through the thin fabric of my beige maid uniform. My white collar itched slightly at the back of my neck, and the white apron strings were tied tightly around my waist, holding me in a posture of permanent service. In front of me, sitting upright in the white high chair, was the toddler girl wearing her blue dress and matching bib. I scooped a small portion of mashed food from the small grey baby bowl using the silver spoon, holding it out toward her with a steady hand. The natural warm interior lighting from the crystal chandeliers overhead cast a soft, amber glow across the dark wood dining table and reflected brightly off the polished stone beneath us.
Then came the sharp echo of footsteps against the marble.
I didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The heavy, deliberate cadence belonged to the formidable man in the tailored black suit. His dark slicked-back hair caught the chandelier light, and the sharp lines of his facial hair and the dark ink of his neck tattoos seemed to pulse with an abrupt, aggressive energy as he strode purposefully across the room toward us.
"Who let you in here?" he demanded.
The low, deep masculine voice vibrated through the quiet air of the dining room, cutting through the low tension ambient room tone. I froze, the silver spoon hovering just inches from the toddler's mouth. My heart hammered against my ribs, a sudden, sharp rhythm that contrasted sharply with the calm, unbothered demeanor of the child.
Slowly, I lifted my gaze from the grey baby bowl. I looked up at him from my kneeling position, my eyes wide and fearful, searching his stern face for any sign of mercy or understanding. But his expression was locked in a hard, unyielding mask. He stood towering over us in the center of the vast dining room, his shoulders squared inside the immaculate black suit. In the background near the grand doorway, three guards in black suits stood motionless, their faces like carved stone, while an older man in a crisp white doctor coat watched the scene unfold with a quiet, watchful detachment.
The toddler didn't flinch. While I trembled beneath the man's intense scrutiny, the little girl turned her head calmly toward the approaching figure. She didn't cry or pull back into her bib. Instead, she lifted a tiny finger and pointed it forward, directing his attention past the dark wood table straight toward the guards stationed near the doorway.
"Mama said they lied to you," the toddler said, her small voice clear and remarkably steady in the echoing room.
The words hung in the air, small and fragile yet dense with a sudden, devastating weight.
The man in the black suit stopped dead in his tracks. He narrowed his eyes in sharp realization, his expression turning intensely stern as the implication of the child's words settled over him like a physical blow. The silence in the room stretched thin, strained by the sudden shift in power and trust.
"What did she just say?" he asked, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous register.
I kept my breath shallow, my fingers gripping the edge of the grey baby bowl so tightly my knuckles turned white. The guards by the doorway remained silent, their eyes fixed straight ahead, but the older man in the white doctor coat subtly shifted his weight from one foot to the other.

The man looked down at me, towering in the center of the room with the guards watching silently in the background, creating palpable tension that pressed against my chest.
"Then tell me who betrayed me," he said.
