Chapter 9: The Grand Ballroom Confrontation

The swell of orchestral music masked the quiet tension as I walked across the polished marble floor of the grand ballroom. Crystal chandeliers overhead cast a brilliant, glittering light over hundreds of guests dining at round tables draped in white linen. The room hummed with polite conversation, laughter, and the clinking of crystal glassware.

Victoria detached herself smoothly from a group of city council members, her silver gown sweeping across the floor as she intercepted me near the edge of the VIP seating tier. Her expression was a masterclass in frozen composure, though her eyes were dangerously sharp.

"Julian," she said, her voice dropping to a low, icy register meant only for my ears. "I didn't think you had the poor taste to show your face here tonight after the legal notice my attorneys served you this morning."

"I never miss a financial audit, Victoria," I replied evenly, keeping my hands resting easily at my sides. "Especially when someone tries to raid accounts that don't belong to them."

Victoria's lips tightened into a hard line, the high-society warmth entirely draining from her features. "You are making a catastrophic mistake. The board has already reviewed the preliminary asset freezes. If you make a scene here tonight, you won't just lose your seat on the executive committee; you'll be permanently blacklisted from every philanthropic circle in this city."

"Let's test that theory," I said, looking past her toward the elevated head table where Arthur Vance and several senior board members sat dining beneath a massive floral centerpiece.

Before Victoria could step in front of me, I raised my voice just enough to carry across the adjacent tables, turning toward the group of influential executives. "Arthur. Good evening. I hope the preliminary financial reports on the foundation's auxiliary accounts are making for light reading."

Arthur froze, a silver fork halfway to his mouth, while several neighboring guests turned their heads at the unexpected mention of foundation audits in a social setting. Victoria's face paled beneath her carefully applied powder.

"Julian, don't," she hissed, her hand gripping my arm with surprising strength, her diamond bracelet flashing under the chandeliers. "You are humiliating yourself and the foundation."

"No, Victoria," I said, gently but firmly removing her hand from my sleeve. "I'm protecting what my late partner built. And if the board wants to see the actual paper trail of unauthorized asset transfers, I brought copies for every single executive member right here in my pocket."

The murmurs around the tables began to rise, shifting from polite small talk to sharp, curious whispers. Arthur slowly lowered his fork, pushing his chair back from the table as he stared at me across the white linen. The golden illusion of unity in the grand ballroom was fracturing in real time, and there was no elegant way left to piece it back together.
