Chapter 14: The Art Class Door

By Wednesday afternoon, the rain had cleared, leaving the suburban streets washed clean and smelling of wet asphalt and damp earth. I drove our sedan down the county road, turning into the parking lot of the local community art center—a modest brick building with cheerful red doors and large windows that let in the warm afternoon light.
It was Lily's first day of neighborhood art classes, an ordinary afternoon activity that no one in our old life would have ever considered appropriate for a high-society ward. But here, among a dozen other children in smudges of paint and denim overalls, she belonged completely.
I waited in the small lobby, sitting on a wooden bench beside a stack of local newsletters and community flyers. Through the glass-paneled interior door, I could see the instructor—a kind-faced woman with graying hair tied back in a scarf—demonstrating brush techniques with watercolors. Lily stood at a low wooden easel, her dark hair clipped back with a simple pink flower, her hands steady as she mixed blue and green on her palette.
There was no tension in her posture, no anxious glance toward a doorway waiting for someone to remind her of her place. She simply painted, completely absorbed in the creation of her own little world.
When the class ended, the door swung open and a wave of chattering children spilled out into the lobby. Lily walked out holding a wet watercolor painting by the corners, her face lit up with an unmistakable pride.
"Look, Julian!" she said, hurrying over and holding up the paper for me to see.
It was a vibrant painting of the suburban street under a bright afternoon sky, complete with the green oak tree from our front yard and a bright pink flower in the corner.

"That's extraordinary, Lily," I said, crouching down to get a better look at the brushwork. "I think this is the best one yet."
She beamed, clutching the paper carefully as the paint dried in the autumn air. We walked out to the car together, the late afternoon sun casting long, golden shadows across the sidewalk.
