Chapter 8: Truth in the Foyer

The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute. Every eye in the room shifted between Mrs. Higgins, who wore a mask of righteous indignation, and Arthur Vance, whose jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle ticked in his cheek.
"An heirloom missing, Mrs. Higgins?" Arthur's voice was dangerously quiet, carrying across the marble floor without the aid of the microphone. "That is a serious accusation. What evidence do you present to support such a claim against my administrative staff?"
"We found the missing sixteenth-century French soup tureen locked inside Evelyn's personal staff locker downstairs," Marcus chimed in eagerly, stepping forward with a triumphant grin. "Officer logs and shift records prove she had unsupervised access to the vault. She's a thief, Mr. Vance. Plain and simple."
Mrs. Higgins nodded eagerly in agreement, while the surrounding board members began whispering amongst themselves, exchanging uneasy glances. I stepped out from the shadow of the marble pillar, my stride steady and deliberate, holding up a small black flash drive between my fingers.
"Before we discuss what was found in my locker, Mr. Vance," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the tension, "perhaps we should review who actually entered the secure vault during my off-hours yesterday. According to the hallway security logs, Mrs. Higgins deactivated the electronic door lock at 2:14 AM using her master override code, carrying a large padded canvas bag."
Marcus's smile vanished instantly. Color drained from Mrs. Higgins's face as she took an involuntary step backward.
Arthur held out his hand, accepting the flash drive from my palm without hesitation. He plugged the device into the media console beside the dais, and within seconds, the massive overhead projector screen descended over the balcony, displaying crystal-clear, timestamped footage of Mrs. Higgins emerging from the vault with the heavy silver tureen, followed moments later by Marcus slipping the canvas bag into my unlocked locker.

The ballroom erupted in stunned murmurs. Arthur looked at the disgraced housekeeper and the cowering security guard, his eyes cold as ice. "Security," Arthur said, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings with absolute authority. "Escort these two off my property immediately. And notify the local authorities that an audit of their personal finances will commence tonight."
As Marcus and Mrs. Higgins were dragged out through the grand double doors, Arthur turned back toward me, stepping down from the dais. The crowd parted respectfully, watching in silence as he stopped just inches away, his expression softening into a warm, genuine smile.
