Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

The chandeliers blazed with blinding brilliance as the first wave of high-society guests began streaming through the grand double doors of Vance Manor. String quartets played softly from the upper balcony, and the scent of crushed white floral arrangements mingled with expensive perfume and vintage champagne. I stood near the edge of the ballroom, dressed in a tailored black administrative suit, my hand resting casually over the brass keys in my pocket.
Across the marble floor, Mrs. Higgins stood near the buffet tables, whispering intently into the ear of a senior board member while casting sharp, venomous glances in my direction. They clearly believed the trap was fully sprung and that my dismissal—or worse, arrest—would be announced before the evening concluded. But I had already spent the last two hours in the security annex with the head technician, downloading the encrypted backup files of the basement hallway cameras onto a secure flash drive.
Arthur descended the sweeping staircase precisely at eight o'clock, looking impeccably sharp in a midnight-blue tuxedo. As he reached the bottom landing, his eyes scanned the crowded room and immediately found mine. He paused, offering a subtle, reassuring nod before turning to greet the prominent city officials and foundation donors waiting at the base of the stairs.
Midway through the opening remarks, Mrs. Higgins flanked by Marcus and two burly security guards marched purposefully across the polished marble floor toward the dais. The room's ambient chatter began to die down as guests noticed the sudden convergence near the front of the ballroom.

"Mr. Vance," Mrs. Higgins announced loudly, her voice cutting through the soft string music with practiced theatrical concern. "I apologize for interrupting the gala, but a grave security breach has occurred. Family heirlooms have been stolen from the vault, and internal evidence points directly to your newly appointed administrative liaison."
A collective murmur rippled through the assembled crowd. Flashbulbs from local society photographers clicked rapidly in the dim perimeter shadows. Arthur turned slowly from the microphone, his expression turning to stone as he looked down at the head housekeeper.
