Chapter 15 - The Open Door

The afternoon sun streamed through the wide front windows of Teresa’s restored apartment on Fourth Street, casting a warm, golden glow over the flour-dusted kitchen counter. The smell of roasted garlic, fresh basil, and simmering tomatoes filled the air, carrying with it the unmistakable comfort of home. Teresa stood by the stove in her brown winter cardigan over a dark shirt, stirring a large pot of water with her wooden serving spoon, a soft smile of pure, unblemished joy lighting up her wrinkled face.

"Stop hovering over the dough like a hawk, Moretti," Teresa scolded playfully without turning around, her voice thick with affection as the front door clicked shut behind us. "The water's boiling, and I need two extra pairs of hands to help roll the ravioli for tonight's neighborhood celebration."

Luca chuckled, rolling up his sleeves to his elbows and revealing the dark tattoos along his forearms as he stepped up beside me. He didn't hesitate; he reached into the bag of flour on the counter with a small, genuine smile that completely transformed his harsh features into something remarkably gentle. I tied my apron strings around my waist, leaning my shoulder against his arm as our hands brushed over the wooden board, kicking up a soft white cloud of flour into the air.

The world outside had stopped threatening us. The shell companies were dissolved, the corrupt executives were facing federal trial, and Teresa's lease was permanently secured under a community land trust that no corporation could ever touch. But none of that mattered right now as much as the simple rhythm of the kitchen, the warmth of the stove, and the quiet certainty of the future resting between us.

"It'll do, Moretti," Teresa chuckled softly, wiping her flour-dusted hands on her apron and turning to look at us with bright, tear-free eyes. "Just don't ruin the eggs."

I laughed, looking up into Luca's dark, steady eyes as he pulled me closer against his side. There were no titles left to protect us, no status to maintain, and no walls to hide behind. There was only us, standing in the sunlight, ready for whatever came next.
