Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Reckoning

The quarterly meeting of the Moretti Corporation board of directors was scheduled for nine o'clock in the high-rise foundation tower downtown, but Luca and I arrived twenty minutes early. The boardroom was a cavernous space of cold glass, polished chrome, and sweeping views of the city skyline under a heavy morning fog. The senior executives sat around the long mahogany table in their expensive charcoal suits, murmuring nervously among themselves as rumors of Vance's sudden disappearance and the federal audit swept through the upper floors.
The heavy glass doors swung open, and Luca walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual relaxed demeanor; he wore the absolute, chilling authority of a man who owned the building down to its foundation. I walked right beside him, wearing my black dress with the crisp white collar, carrying a leather briefcase packed with the decrypted ledgers and Teresa's original lease documents.
Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats, their eyes darting from Luca to me with undisguised disdain. One of the senior vice presidents, a graying man named Sterling who had backed Vance's real estate schemes for years, cleared his throat loudly.
"Moretti, what is the meaning of this?" Sterling demanded, standing up from his chair. "And why is a domestic employee standing in our boardroom during a confidential executive session? Security should have removed her at the lobby."
Luca didn't even look at Sterling. He pulled out the central chair at the head of the table, sat down slowly, and placed both hands flat on the polished wood.
"Sit down, Sterling," Luca said, his voice cutting through the cavernous room like a razor. "And watch your tone. The woman standing beside me is Emma Reed. She is the granddaughter of Teresa Caruso, whose apartment your little subsidiary illegally tried to demolish last week."
"That was a municipal clearance project--" Sterling started, but Luca raised a single finger, silencing him instantly.
"That was a forgery ring run by Marcus Vance using corporate funds to steal residential land," Luca interrupted, his dark eyes sweeping across the entire board. "I have here the complete digital ledger, signed off by Vance and routed through three offshore shells. Federal investigators already have copies of every transaction. By noon, federal marshals will be serving warrants to every executive who approved those funds."
A collective gasp echoed around the table. Sterling's face drained of color as he gripped the edge of the mahogany table for support. "You're destroying the firm, Luca. You're destroying us all!"

"I'm saving what's left of it," Luca replied coldly. He turned his head toward me, giving a subtle nod.
I stepped forward, unclipped the briefcase, and placed Teresa's original lease document right in the center of the mahogany table, alongside the federal audit notices. The silence in the boardroom was absolute, broken only by the faint hum of the HVAC system overhead.
