Chapter 11 - The Corridor of Shadows

The waiting room outside Family Court on the fourth floor of the downtown municipal building smelled of damp wool, old floor wax, and unyielding panic. Fluorescent tubes flickered overhead, casting a harsh, sickly yellow glow across the worn linoleum tiles. I clutched my leather handbag so tightly my knuckles turned chalk-white, my gaze fixed on the mahogany double doors at the end of the long, narrow corridor. Inside those doors, Judge Miller sat on an elevated bench, holding the future of my daughter in his manicured hands.

"Elena. Look at me."

Vincent’s deep, steady voice cut through the rising hysteria humming in my ears. He stood beside me, immaculate in his tailored charcoal suit, his dark shirt open at the throat to reveal the inked edges of chest tattoos peeking above the fabric. He didn't touch me—he knew better than to crowd me when my defenses were this frayed—but his physical presence was an anchor of cold, hard steel against the storm.

I turned my head, my eyes burning with unshed tears. "Arthur is already inside with his counsel. If Miller grants that emergency injunction before Diane arrives with the audit files..."

"Diane landed at O'Hare two hours ago and is clearing security downstairs right now," Vincent interrupted, his tone an absolute decree that brooked no argument. "Arthur Gable is a second-rate hack playing a game rigged by a man who's about to lose everything. Breathe, Elena."

Before I could answer, the elevator doors at the opposite end of the corridor chimed with a harsh metallic ping. Arthur Gable stepped out into the hallway, smoothing the lapels of his expensive tweed jacket with a smug, self-satisfied grin. Flanked by two paralegals loaded down with bulging accordion folders, he spotted us immediately and altered his path to stride directly toward where Vincent and I stood.

"Well, well. Playing dress-up at the courthouse with your new sugar daddy, Elena?" Arthur sneered, stopping just a few feet away. His eyes flicked over my modest wool coat with thinly veiled contempt before sliding toward Vincent. "You're out of your depth here, Romano. Real estate acquisitions in the Tenderloin are one thing, but family law courts don't care about your street muscle. Judge Miller signs that emergency order by noon, and Lily is back under my client's legal guardianship before dark."

I felt a hot surge of fury spike through my veins, pushing past the terror. I took a sharp step forward, opening my mouth to hurl every bitter truth I’d kept buried for two years straight into his condescending face. But Vincent moved a fraction of a second faster.

Without raising his voice or shifting his posture an inch, Vincent stepped directly into Arthur’s personal space, towering over the lawyer by half a foot. The casual, almost lazy way Vincent reached out to adjust his gold watch-band carried a quiet, terrifying menace that made Arthur visibly flinch and take a half-step backward.

"Arthur," Vincent said softly, his voice dropping into a register that sounded like grinding stones. "You have exactly three minutes to walk through those courtroom doors, sit down at your table, and practice keeping your mouth shut. Because if you address my wife with that tone of voice again today, I'm going to stop playing civil and start auditing every penny your firm has funneled from Marcus Vance since 2019."

Arthur’s smug expression evaporated instantly, replaced by a pale, sickly sheen of sweat along his hairline. He swallowed hard, his eyes darting from Vincent’s impassive face to the heavy double doors behind us. Without another word, the lawyer turned on his heel and practically fled down the corridor toward the courtroom entrance, his paralegals scrambling to keep pace.

Vincent turned back to me, the lethal edge vanishing from his eyes as quickly as it had appeared, leaving only that quiet, unshakeable steadiness. "Come on, Elena. Let's go end this."
