Chapter 14 - Rattle Of The Iron Rails

The interior of the boxcar smelled of old grain dust, engine oil, and damp wood. As the heavy doors rattled on their tracks and the train picked up speed along the winding interstate rails, we collapsed against the back wall. I pulled my knees to my chest, shivering violently from the freezing mountain air rushing through the gaps in the timber.
Leo slid down beside me, unzipping his ruined gray suit jacket and letting it fall to the floor. He pressed a hand against his ribs, his breathing shallow and uneven. The wound on his forearm was still weeping dark blood, soaking through his torn white shirt.
"Let me look at it," I whispered, reaching out to peel the fabric away from his skin.
"I'm fine," he muttered instinctively, though he didn't pull away.
"Stop trying to be untouchable, Leo. It's just us now."
A tired, genuine smile finally broke through the hardened lines of his face. He leaned his head back against the rolling wooden wall, letting out a long breath that sounded like years of accumulated weight leaving his shoulders at once. "You know, when you told me I could stay that first night, I thought you were just a terrified kid who didn't know what she was getting into."
"I was terrified," I replied softly, cleaning the scratch on his arm with the edge of my clean apron hem. "And I probably still am."
"You saved my life," he said, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense register that cut through the roar of the rails. "Marcus is going to keep hunting, but the ledger we have... it's enough to put him and his entire syndicate away for good if we hand it to the federal field office down in the port city. But once we walk into that building, there's no going back to the shadows."

"I don't want the shadows," I said, looking straight into his eyes. "I just want it to end."
He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the line of my cheek, wiping away a smear of soot and dried mud. For the first time since we met, the fear in his eyes was entirely gone, replaced by an unshakable, quiet resolve.
