Chapter 15 - A New Foundation

The morning sun cast a warm, golden glow across the polished oak floors of the library as the bricklayers finished sealing the final gap in the wall behind the tall wooden bookshelves. The heavy thud of mortar being smoothed into place echoed softly through the room, sounding less like a threat and more like the laying of a permanent, unbreakable foundation.
I stood near the doorway with Lily balanced securely on my hip, watching Matteo inspect the finished work. He ran a gloved hand along the seamless dark wood paneling where the hidden entrance had once hidden our deepest struggles. Satisfied, he turned around and walked over to us, his black shirt and dark styled hair looking every bit the part of the estate's master, but his expression was entirely warm and welcoming.
Mom walked into the library a moment later, leaning slightly on a wooden cane but walking under her own power for the first time in weeks. She wore a soft gray cardigan that matched the morning light, her eyes bright and clear as she looked around the grand room without a trace of fear or exhaustion.
"It looks as though the house finally has some peace," Mom said softly, her voice steady and strong as she stopped beside me.
Matteo walked over, stopping a few feet away with a respectful, easy grace. "The house belongs to all of us now, Sarah. No agencies, no midnight shifts, and no secrets behind the walls. Just a home."

Mom offered him a gentle, genuine smile, extending her hand. Matteo took it, his grip firm and reassuring, sealing an unspoken promise that spanned far beyond any employment contract or property deed. Lily reached out from my hip, letting out a cheerful gurgle and grabbing playfully at the silver watch on Matteo's wrist. Matteo chuckled, gently untangling her tiny fingers while looking between Mom, Lily, and me with a quiet, profound sense of belonging that he had clearly spent a lifetime searching for.
The central tension that had brought us together on that dark, freezing midnight in the library had finally dissolved into something enduring and real. As the morning light filled the tall windows and warmed the dark wood paneling, I knew the shadows of the past were gone for good. We weren't hiding in the margins anymore. We were standing right where we belonged.
