Chapter 6: The Salon Standoff

The digital access logs sat on the center of the mahogany desk like an indictment, glowing faintly in the screen of Arthur's laptop while the accountant waited silently in the corner of the room. Every keystroke, every timestamp, and every routing number confirmed the scope of the deception: my wife had not merely borrowed against the estate's holdings; she had systematically severed my legal control over the primary trust accounts, preparing for a total liquidation before I returned from the overseas shipping negotiations.

I left the study and crossed the long, polished marble hallway where the confrontation had begun hours earlier. The house was unnaturally quiet, the high ceilings amplifying the distant, hollow sound of my own footsteps against the reflective floor. Through the arched glass doors of the grand salon, I saw her silhouette standing near the marble fireplace, holding a crystal glass of amber liquid, her long white dress catching the warm light of the wall sconces.

She did not turn as I pushed the double doors open, though the sudden shift in the air pressure signaled my entry.

"Arthur has already provided the access logs," I said, my voice cutting through the silence of the large, vaulted room. "Every transfer code, every proxy signature, every dollar routed to the Vance & Associates shell account."

She turned slowly, setting her glass down on the marble mantelpiece with a sharp clink. Her face was entirely composed, the panic from the hallway completely replaced by a cold, calculated composure.

"You always were entirely too thorough, Lorenzo," she said, her voice steady and devoid of remorse. "You spend your entire life staring at ledgers and shipping manifests while the world around you moves on to more lucrative arrangements."

"It wasn't a business arrangement," I replied, stepping closer until only the width of a low coffee table separated us. "It was theft disguised as domestic management, carried out behind my back while you played the dutiful wife."

"And what do you expect to accomplish now?" she asked, tilting her chin up with a defiant spark in her dark eyes. "If you make this public, the scandal will freeze every asset we hold in the maritime trusts for years. The board will panic, the investors will pull out, and your precious family name will be dragged through every court in the city."

"The assets are already frozen," I said, letting the words settle between us like stone. "Arthur gave me the master keys to the secondary accounts ten minutes ago. Your access cards have been deactivated throughout the estate, and the legal notices have already been drafted for my attorneys to file at first light."

Her composure faltered for a fraction of a second, her hands gripping the edge of the marble mantel as the reality of the maneuver set in. "You wouldn't lock me out of my own home."

May you like

"I am not locking you out of your home," I said, turning away toward the double doors. "I am simply ensuring that you watch the dissolution of your scheme from the outside."

I stepped back out into the grand hallway and pulled the heavy mahogany doors shut, turning the brass key in the lock with a firm, definitive click that echoed down the empty corridor.
