Chapter 14: The Boardroom Confrontation

The download progress bar hit ninety-nine percent just as a heavy shoulder slammed against the exterior archive door, cracking the reinforced wooden frame. Marcus grabbed the solid-state drive from the terminal port just as Miller fired two calculated warning shots into the reinforced door panel, halting the advancing security guards in their tracks.

"Got it!" Marcus shouted, tucking the drive securely into his inner coat pocket.

"Move! Out through the utility hatch!" I urged, grabbing Cole’s arm to steady him as we scrambled toward the rear maintenance shaft leading up to the main administrative atrium.

We didn't run down the hidden hallways this time; instead, we burst directly through the double mahogany doors of the executive boardroom on the third floor, where Dr. Arthur Sterling and the hospital's governing board were currently seated around a polished oak conference table, reviewing their morning briefing packets.

Dr. Sterling stood up abruptly from his leather armchair, his grey hair neatly combed, his white lab coat immaculate. His face flushed with sudden fury as he looked past security to see Cole standing upright, supported by my arm, flanked by a massive brindle mastiff and an armed officer.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?" Sterling demanded, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage as he slammed his hand down on the mahogany table. "Call security! These individuals are trespassing and medically unstable!"

"The only trespasser in this room, Dr. Sterling, is you," Marcus said, stepping forward and tossing the solid-state drive directly onto the conference table, where it skidded to a halt against Sterling's silver coffee carafe. "Every unapproved pharmaceutical test, every falsified patient chart, and every illegal financial transfer is currently mirroring to federal servers as we speak."

Sterling’s composure cracked instantly. The color drained from his face as he looked from the small drive up to Cole’s steady, unblinking gaze. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out; the weight of undeniable physical evidence had completely dismantled his carefully constructed empire of corporate immunity.

Two state troopers, alerted by Miller’s emergency radio transmission, stepped through the boardroom doors behind us, their uniforms crisp and their badges catching the morning light through the tall glass windows overlooking the city.

"Dr. Arthur Sterling, you're under arrest for corporate fraud, reckless endangerment, and illegal pharmaceutical testing," the lead trooper stated, stepping forward to place cold steel cuffs around the elderly doctor's wrists.
