Chapter 6 - THE EMPLOYEE WHO COULDN'T LIVE WITH HER LIE

“I LAUGHED WHEN THEY HUMILIATED YOU, CAPTAIN BROOKS. BUT THE WORST PART IS THAT I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG—AND I WAS TOO AFRAID TO STOP IT!”

Courtney Blake sat across from Danielle in a quiet attorney's conference room.

Her hands were trembling.

She hadn't slept properly since losing her job.

Her face looked tired, and the confidence she had displayed at Gate 14 had disappeared.

Danielle studied the young woman.

Two days earlier, Courtney had stood beside Brendan Hayes and mocked her credentials.

Now she had voluntarily contacted an independent attorney and agreed to provide evidence.

Danielle didn't know whether Courtney was motivated by guilt, fear, or the hope of recovering her employment.

Perhaps all three.

But she was willing to listen.

“Start from the beginning,” Danielle said.

Courtney swallowed.

“Taylor received a message around 6:30 that morning.”

“From whom?”

“Corporate operations.”

Danielle leaned forward.

“Did you see the message yourself?”

“Yes. Taylor forwarded part of it to our work group.”

“Why?”

“She said we needed to prepare for a security compliance situation.”

Danielle exchanged a glance with the independent attorney, Nadine Harper.

Nadine was a respected employment investigator who had agreed to preserve the evidence and conduct interviews outside Michael Reynolds's reporting structure.

She opened a notebook.

“Courtney, please tell us exactly what you remember. Don't guess about anything you didn't personally see.”

Courtney nodded.

Then she removed her phone.

### The Instruction That Changed Everything

The message appeared inside an employee group chat.

Its timestamp was 6:31 a.m.

Its subject line read:

PRIORITY ACCESS CONTROL — GATE 14.

Below it was Danielle's name.

Captain Danielle Brooks.

Flight 2187.

Atlanta to New York.

Courtney watched Danielle's reaction.

“Taylor said someone from corporate had already verified that you were a possible security concern.”

Danielle read the message.

Employee is scheduled to appear at Gate 14. Maintain boarding restriction until executive review is completed. Do not initiate local manual clearance. Escalate any challenge through corporate operations.

Danielle looked up.

“Did anyone tell you I wasn't actually a pilot?”

Courtney hesitated.

“Taylor said you might be pretending to be one.”

“But the message identified me as a captain.”

“Yes.”

“Did you notice that contradiction?”

Courtney looked down.

“I did.”

“Then why did you laugh?”

The question settled heavily between them.

Courtney rubbed her hands together.

“Because Brendan laughed first. And Taylor was my supervisor.”

Danielle said nothing.

Courtney's eyes filled.

“I know how terrible that sounds.”

“I'm asking why you made that decision.”

Courtney nodded slowly.

“I wanted them to think I belonged with them.”

She looked at Danielle.

“I've spent six years working toward a supervisor position. Taylor controlled my evaluations. Brendan had connections with management. I thought if I challenged them, I'd become the next employee everyone mocked.”

Danielle held her gaze.

“So you helped them mock me instead.”

Courtney lowered her head.

“Yes.”

The honesty was painful.

But Danielle appreciated that Courtney hadn't attempted to excuse her behavior.

“Being afraid doesn't remove your responsibility,” Danielle said.

“I know.”

“Neither does following an improper instruction.”

“I understand.”

Courtney took a deep breath.

“That's why I'm here.”

### Why Courtney Saved the Screenshot

Nadine asked another question.

“Why did you preserve the message?”

Courtney looked toward the window.

“Because something about it didn't make sense.”

She explained that corporate security instructions normally required employees to verify identification through approved channels.

They never directed gate agents to ignore valid documents altogether.

And the warning about Danielle had arrived before any suspicious conduct occurred.

“I thought maybe it was a test,” Courtney admitted.

“A training exercise?”

“Something like that.”

“Who suggested that?”

“Taylor.”

Courtney opened another message.

This one had been sent at 6:36 a.m.

Maintain the hold. Executive personnel will attend the gate shortly after the subject arrives. Record factual observations.

Nadine read the text carefully.

“Who sent this?”

“Taylor forwarded it from the corporate operations communications channel.”

“Do you know which individual originally issued it?”

“No.”

“Then we'll need the original system records.”

Courtney nodded.

Danielle looked at the timestamp.

Nine minutes before she reached Gate 14.

Someone had expected her arrival.

Someone had instructed employees to restrict her access.

And someone had arranged for executives to appear afterward.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

But there was still an important distinction.

The instructions didn't explicitly tell anyone to mock Danielle or make prejudiced comments.

That conduct belonged to Taylor, Brendan, and Courtney.

The system might have created the opportunity.

Their choices had made it cruel.

### The Other Side of a Public Scandal

After the interview, Courtney remained seated.

“Captain Brooks?”

Danielle paused near the door.

“Yes?”

“I need to tell you something else.”

Danielle turned.

Courtney took a shaky breath.

“I've been watching the videos. Some people are saying we were innocent workers who got fired because you were angry.”

Danielle waited.

“I know that's not true.”

Courtney wiped her eyes.

“I don't want people using me to make you look like the villain.”

“Then tell the truth through the investigation.”

“I will.”

Danielle nodded.

Courtney hesitated.

“Do you hate me?”

Danielle considered the question.

“I hated what happened.”

Courtney looked up.

“And you?”

“I don't know you well enough to hate you. But I know you made a choice that hurt someone.”

Courtney's eyes filled again.

Danielle continued.

“What matters now is whether you're willing to accept the consequences and become someone who makes a different choice next time.”

Courtney whispered:

“I want to.”

“Then start there.”

Danielle left the room.

She wasn't ready to forgive everything.

Forgiveness was not something a person could demand simply because they felt remorse.

But she also refused to reduce Courtney to the worst ten minutes of her life.

### The Secret Meeting Upstairs

That afternoon, Meredith Cole summoned Danielle to headquarters.

The CEO's office occupied the top floor of the building.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the airport.

Meredith stood near her desk when Danielle entered.

Michael Reynolds sat beside the conference table.

Danielle immediately stopped.

“I requested a private meeting.”

Meredith gestured toward a chair.

“Michael is involved in the system review.”

“That's precisely why I wanted to speak with you.”

Michael smiled politely.

“Danielle, we all want the same thing.”

“Then you'll welcome independent examination of the records.”

He leaned back.

“Of course. Within appropriate legal boundaries.”

Meredith raised a hand.

“I don't want another argument.”

Danielle remained standing.

“Then I need you to hear something without dismissing it.”

She explained the pre-arrival messages, the manual restriction against Elena Ruiz, and the preliminary evidence preserved by Nadine Harper.

Meredith listened.

Michael interrupted twice.

Danielle calmly asked him to let her finish.

When she was done, Meredith looked toward Michael.

“Did your department issue instructions about Danielle's gate access before she arrived?”

Michael's expression became serious.

“Meredith, the system creates automated alerts. That doesn't mean anyone targeted Danielle personally.”

“That wasn't my question,” Meredith replied.

For the first time, Danielle noticed genuine uncertainty in the CEO's face.

Michael adjusted his cuffs.

“I'll have our technical team provide a complete explanation.”

Meredith nodded.

“I expect it tomorrow morning.”

Danielle said quietly:

“I also expect the original records to be preserved.”

Michael gave a tight smile.

“Naturally.”

As Danielle turned toward the door, Meredith called after her.

“Danielle.”

She stopped.

“I'm not your enemy.”

Danielle looked back.

“Then don't make me fight you to find the truth.”

### The Discovery After Midnight

At 11:52 p.m., Nadine called Danielle.

“We verified the screenshot Courtney provided.”

Danielle sat upright in bed.

“And?”

“The messages were authentic. We also identified the administrative service that transmitted them.”

“Which one?”

“An internal communications gateway assigned to Michael Reynolds's executive office.”

Danielle closed her eyes.

“Does that prove he personally sent them?”

“No. But the original authorization records should tell us who approved the transmission.”

“Do we have those?”

“Not yet.”

Nadine paused.

“There's another problem.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed the archive this evening and requested deletion of the original gate security communications.”

Danielle sat forward.

“Who?”

“The request came from an administrative account associated with corporate operations.”

Danielle looked toward the dark bedroom window.

“Was the deletion completed?”

“No. Our legal preservation notice reached the system before the scheduled purge.”

She exhaled.

“Thank God.”

Nadine continued.

“But we received another alert. Someone has requested deletion of the physical badge-authorization logs from Gate 14.”

Danielle stood.

“When?”

May you like

Nadine's answer made her blood run cold.

“The deletion is scheduled for 6:00 a.m.—and the request carries Michael Reynolds's personal executive authorization.”
