Chapter 10 - The Ballroom Confrontation

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom below finally swung open, the rising swell of applause and clinking crystal signaling that the guest of honor had arrived. Vance stood up from where he knelt beside my chair, his expression instantly shifting back into the cold, impenetrable mask of the syndicate boss. He reached inside his jacket, checking the slide of his firearm with a crisp, mechanical click before buttoning his black suit coat.
"It's time," he said, his voice level and ice-cold. "Marcus is stepping up to the dais. He thinks he's celebrating his complete victory tonight. We're going to give him a different kind of reception."
I stood up, smoothing down the black vest of my catering uniform one last time. My hands were steady now, the trembling replaced by a fierce, cold resolve that matched his own. We didn't take the service stairs this time; Vance used the private elevator reserved for penthouse guests, swiping his master keycard to drop us straight down to the mezzanine level overlooking the main floor.
The ballroom was a sea of glittering chandeliers, expensive silk gowns, and tailored tuxedos. Wealthy patrons sipped champagne near towering floral arrangements, entirely oblivious to the violent undercurrents swirling just beneath the polished marble floors. On the raised dais at the far end of the room, flanked by two armed security guards, stood Marcus—a sleek, silver-tongued man in a cream-colored tuxedo, smiling as he accepted congratulations from local politicians and business leaders.
Vance stepped out from the mezzanine archway, walking with slow, deliberate strides down the grand marble staircase in full view of everyone. The murmur of the ballroom began to die down, ripple by ripple, as influential faces turned to look at the man everyone assumed was dead or lying low in the wreckage of a burned safe house. Marcus froze mid-sentence, his champagne glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the hardwood dais with a sharp, echoing crack.
"You..." Marcus choked out, his face draining of all color as he stared up at Vance descending the stairs like an avenging ghost.
"Hello, Marcus," Vance said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent, stunned ballroom. "You forgot one very important rule about my organization."
Before Marcus could reach for the weapon hidden inside his tuxedo jacket, Vance drew his sidearm with lightning speed, leveling it straight across the crowded room. Pandemonium erupted instantly—screams echoed off the crystal chandeliers, wealthy patrons dove beneath tables, and security guards scrambled for cover. But Vance didn't break his stride, keeping his eyes locked entirely on the traitor shaking on the dais.

"What rule is that?" Marcus stammered, backing away toward the heavy velvet curtains behind the stage.
"Never leave a witness," Vance whispered into the chaos, pulling the trigger just as the first sirens began wailing outside in the rainy night.
