Chapter 8 - The Charity Gala Foyer

The grand ballroom of the Metropolis Arts Pavilion was glittering under thousands of crystal pendants, hosting the annual winter philanthropy ball where Preston Hale was scheduled to receive the Legacy Humanitarian Award. Beneath the glittering chandeliers and the polite hum of classical string music, however, a very different kind of tension hung in the air. Adrian and I had bypassed the main registration desk by using a pair of security credentials provided by the federal investigator, slipping into the rear foyer unnoticed amidst a throng of caterers and late-arriving donors.

Preston stood near the center dais, laughing smoothly with a group of city council members while adjusting the black bow tie at his collar. He looked untouchable in his crisp white tuxedo jacket, surrounded by an invisible buffer of sycophants and private bodyguards who scanned the crowd for any sign of trouble. But trouble was already walking across the polished black marble floor toward him.

As Adrian and I approached the base of the dais, the string quartet crescendoed and faded out, leaving a brief vacuum of silence just as Preston turned around. His eyes locked onto mine. The easy, arrogant smile vanished from his face in a fraction of a second, replaced by a flash of raw, unadulterated panic that made him stumble half a step backward into a display table of crystal champagne flutes.

"What is she doing here?" Preston hissed, his voice carrying sharply across the quietened perimeter of the room as he pointed an accusing finger directly at me. "Security! Get this disgraced servant out of my sight before I have her arrested for trespassing."

Two burly private guards in dark suits immediately detached themselves from the walls, stepping forward to block our path. But Adrian didn't flinch. He stepped smoothly in front of me, flashing a leather-bound federal badge that caught the harsh overhead light.

"Step aside," Adrian commanded, his voice cold and devoid of any hesitation. "Preston Hale, you are being served with an emergency injunction and a federal warrant for questioning regarding aggravated assault and corporate fraud. Make a scene, and you'll spend tonight in a holding cell instead of a suite."

The murmurs of the surrounding elite swelled into a chaotic wave of gasps and whispers. Cameras flashed from the press balcony as Preston's face drained of all color, his polished facade fracturing completely under the weight of public exposure.
