Chapter 13: Dawn at the Foundation Tower

The dark gray town car slid through the polished concrete perimeter of the Vance Foundation Tower just as the early morning sun burned through the low coastal fog, casting long, sharp amber beams across the glass-and-steel facade. My fingers tightened slightly around the edge of my blue dress as Marcus killed the engine in the subterranean garage. In the back seat beside me, Julian adjusted the white swaddle blanket, his dark wavy hair catching the fluorescent glare of the parking bay. He looked entirely composed, the tailored black suit jacket fitted smooth across his broad shoulders, though the faint tension around his jaw betrayed the weight of what was coming.

"Stay close to Marcus when we reach the elevators," Julian said, his voice low and steady as he glanced down at the newborn nestled securely against his chest. "Once the oak doors open, let the evidence do the talking. Don't let Richard bait you."

I nodded, swallowing the dry knot in my throat. We stepped out into the chilly air of the garage, Marcus taking the lead with his hand resting near his coat pocket where the estate security keys and incident logs were safely tucked. We rode the private executive elevator upward in absolute silence, the digital floor numbers ticking past like a countdown—forty-two, forty-three, forty-four—until the chime signaled our arrival at the top floor.

The heavy oak doors parted to reveal the high-floor boardroom. It was a vast, minimalist space dominated by a polished walnut conference table that stretched toward a floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the city. Richard Vance sat at the head of the table, his silver hair neatly brushed, flanked by three senior board members whose expressions shifted from bored impatience to stiff surprise as Julian walked into the room.

"Julian," Richard said, standing up with a thin, practiced smile that didn't reach his eyes. "We didn't expect you to grace us with your presence today, especially considering the messy domestic scandals swirling around your private estate. And who is this—" Richard's gaze flicked briefly toward me and then to the bundle in Julian's arms, a flash of genuine confusion cutting through his smug demeanor. "What is the meaning of bringing an infant into a board meeting?"

"Save the performance, Uncle," Julian said, his voice ringing cold and flat across the silent room as he walked uninvited to the head of the table, opposite Richard. He didn't sit down. Instead, he placed the white swaddle blanket gently down on the polished wood surface, leaving the infant's tiny, calm face visible to everyone in the room. "You called this emergency session to vote on my removal, claiming my private life made me unfit to lead Vance Holdings. But you forgot one crucial detail. You left your accountant's ledger behind in the east wing guest quarters."

A murmur rippled through the seated board members. Richard's face lost its color, the practiced smile evaporating instantly. "You're babbling. The man is clearly unhinged," Richard snapped, looking around the table. "Gentlemen, let's call security and clear this room."

"Marcus," Julian said quietly.

Marcus stepped forward, placing a thick leather-bound folder and a digital tablet right beside the baby. "Here are the wire transfer records routing estate funds to the underground maternity clinic, authorized by Richard's personal assistant," Marcus stated evenly, his voice carrying the authority of twenty years protecting the company. "And here is the sworn video confession of nurse Evelyn, detailing how Richard paid her to abduct the child from the nursery and plant him in the pantry to create a manufactured scandal that would force Julian out."

Julian leaned forward, resting his tattooed hands on the edge of the table, his dark eyes narrowing with intense, calculated fury. "You tried to steal my son, Richard. And in doing so, you violated every fiduciary and criminal law this corporation stands for."

One of the senior board members, a gray-haired woman named Eleanor Vance-Davis, pulled the leather folder toward her, scanning the first page before looking up with a look of profound disgust directed at Richard. "My God, Richard. Is this true?"

Richard backed away from the table, his hands trembling slightly as he realized every escape route had been cut off. "It's a fabrication—a desperate lie to keep him in power!"

"Security," Eleanor said sharply, pressing the intercom button on the walnut console. "Escort Richard Vance from the building immediately. Freeze all his corporate assets pending a federal audit."

Two uniformed building guards appeared at the boardroom doors within seconds, flanking Richard before he could utter another word. As they led him away in disgrace, his head bowed against the humiliation, the heavy silence of the boardroom settled back over the room. Julian turned back toward the table, gently picking up his son once more, the fierce hardness in his expression finally softening as he looked down at the child who had changed everything.
