Chapter 13 - The Ledger on the Screen

The moment Gideon stepped up to the center microphone under the brilliant wash of spotlights, the auditorium fell into a respectful, anticipatory hush. I watched him from the edge of the wings—his silver hair impeccably styled, his bright blue suit catching the stage lights as he smiled down at the sea of influential faces in the audience. He raised a hand to quiet the polite applause, clearing his throat to deliver the keynote address that was supposed to cement his untouchable legacy for another decade.
"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed partners," Gideon began, his rich, resonant voice carrying effortlessly through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Tonight, we celebrate another milestone of transparency, philanthropy, and community trust..."
He never got to finish the sentence.
With a soft electronic chime, the massive projection screens suspended above the stage abruptly flickered. The foundation's polished promotional graphics vanished, replaced instantly by high-resolution scans of the master financial ledgers, wire transfer receipts routed through offshore shell accounts, and Arthur's signed deposition detailing the systematic embezzlement of charitable endowments. His mouth remained slightly open, the practiced smile freezing and shattering into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic as he stared up at the massive display of his own crimes broadcast in forty-foot letters.
"What is the meaning of this?" Gideon stammered into the live microphone, his voice cracking slightly as he spun around to face the projection screens, his hands gripping the edges of the podium until his knuckles turned white. "Cut that feed! Security, shut down the master console immediately!"

Before his private detail could move toward the control booth, I stepped out from the shadows of the wings and walked deliberately across the polished wooden stage into the brilliant circle of the spotlights. The murmur in the audience died down instantly, replaced by a stunned silence as hundreds of eyes shifted from the incriminating screens to me standing in my lavender blouse, my head held high and my posture unwavering.
Gideon whipped his head around, his eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of absolute fury and desperate disbelief. "Sloan," he hissed, taking a threatening step toward me across the stage, forgetting for a single, fatal second that the live cameras and the entire city were watching his every move. "You miserable little—"
