Chapter 12: Convergence at the Threshold

The elevator banks on the main guest floor hummed back to life with a soft, melodic chime as the central security system completed its hard reboot. The digital display above the central car shifted from red warning telemetry back to a steady, glowing blue, indicating that all overrides had been successfully cleared by the technical team. I stood beside the polished brass control panel, smoothing down the front of my gray apron one last time while the bodyguard—standing a few paces away with his hand resting lightly on his earpiece—nodded in silent, grudging approval.

Marquina walked out from the private elevator foyer, his stride measured and deliberate. The tension that had defined his posture since the moment we first collided in the hallway days ago had finally given way to a quiet, steady resolve. The corporate board had capitulated, Vance was locked in federal custody awaiting arraignment, and the internal security leak had been completely cauterized.

"The morning audit is clear," the bodyguard reported, his voice dropping into a professional monotone as he checked his tablet. "Federal agents have impounded the offshore servers. No further active threats are flagged on the property network."

"Good," Marquina said, not taking his eyes off me. He stopped two steps away, the warm overhead sconces catching the sharp lines of his jaw and the dark stubble along his cheek. "The general manager wants to promote you to head of security logistics. It comes with a proper office, a salary that doesn't require standing shifts, and a uniform that doesn't involve carrying a cleaning towel."

I looked down at the white cloth still tucked neatly into my belt loop, then back up into his dark, searching eyes. "I like the towel," I said with a faint, dry smile. "It has better utility than an office chair."

Marquina let out a short, genuine laugh—the first real, unforced sound I had heard from him since this entire nightmare began. "Keep it, then. But let's get you out of the housekeeping wing. My father's legacy is secure, but I think I'd rather have you watching the doors than any team of professionals I could hire."
