Chapter 1 - The Weight of the White Ceramic Plate

The cool marble floor pressed hard against my bare feet, sending a dull, familiar ache up my spine. Around me, the modern luxury kitchen was cast in deep shadows, save for the warm amber glow spilling from the wooden pantry shelves. Those shelves, usually stacked with immaculate glass jars of imported pasta and dry goods, had become my only refuge during the endless night shifts. In my trembling hands, PLATE_1—a simple white ceramic plate holding a meager portion of leftover rice, green beans, and meat—felt heavier than any silver platter I polished during the day.

Then his voice cut through the stillness, low and sharp.

"Why are you eating in here alone?"

My heart slammed against my ribs. I looked up to see PERSON_A standing at the pantry threshold. He was tall, his dark slicked-back hair catching the faint light, dressed in his immaculate fitted black button-down shirt and dark trousers. His expression wasn't angry; it was intensely stern and deeply concerned, a look that paralyzed me. I clutched the plate tighter with both hands, my knuckles turning white against the ceramic rim. Every defensive instinct I had honed over months of working in this sprawling estate flared up, mixing hot shame with raw exhaustion.

He didn't move closer, respecting the tight perimeter of the pantry, but his dark eyes swept over the food in my lap, then back to my face. The silence stretched between us, thick with unspoken questions. I swallowed hard, trying to steady the frantic rhythm of my breathing. I hadn't expected anyone to check the lower inventory shelves past midnight. The staff quarters were on the opposite wing, and the master suite was usually dead to the world by eleven. Yet here he was, staring down at me as if I were a puzzle he couldn't quite solve.

"I asked you a question," he said quietly, stepping one pace over the threshold. The warmth of the accent lighting caught the sharp line of his jaw.

"I was just... taking a moment," I managed, my voice raspy and small in the expansive kitchen.

"With leftovers hidden behind the grain jars?" His gaze dropped again to the plate, lingering on the meager portion of green beans and rice. The skepticism in his voice gave way to a heavier, darker realization. He crouched slightly, bridging the distance between our heights without losing his commanding presence. "How long have you been hiding this from me?"

May you like

The directness of his tone broke something fragile inside my chest. I stared at him, my vision blurring slightly with hot, unbidden tears. I didn't want my destitution exposed. I didn't want pity.

"I didn't want anyone to know," I whispered back, my voice cracking on the final word.
