Chapter 7 - The Terms of the Engagement

The silence in the penthouse stretched for several long seconds, broken only by the distant hum of the city's HVAC system filtering through the thick double-paned windows. I looked out past Thorne's shoulder at the gray expanse of the river cutting through the concrete valley, tracing the bridges that connected the industrial docks to the financial core. The rules of my old life were gone; the neat bun, the white collared shirt, the tip jar at the end of a twelve-hour double shift—all of it traded for a corner office on the fortieth floor and a man who looked at human relationships as entries on a balance sheet.

"What kind of arrangement?" I asked, turning my gaze back to him.

"A temporary contract," Thorne said, sliding a manila folder across the walnut desk. It stopped an inch from my fingertips. "You'll be added to my firm's payroll as a risk-assessment associate, effective today. You'll receive a retainer that covers your rent for the next six months, a secure phone, and an apartment in a building downtown where Julian's security cards don't work. In exchange, you give me your time, your discretion, and your ability to blend into rooms where men like Julian think they can operate without witnesses."

I reached out and tapped the corner of the manila folder. I didn't open it yet. "And if I say no?"

"You go back to your car, drive home, and spend the next week dodging process servers and looking over your shoulder every time a black sedan slows down on your street," Thorne said without malice. "Julian isn't a criminal mastermind, but he has money, and money buys people who enjoy making life difficult for waitresses. I'm offering you the tools to change the power dynamic."

I lifted the cover of the folder. Inside was a standard employment contract, a set of keys with an electronic fob, and a printed itinerary for an upscale charity gala scheduled for Friday night at the Harbor Hotel—an event where Julian Vance was slated to be the guest of honor. My name was already typed onto the guest list under a consultancy header I didn't recognize.

"You've planned this out," I said quietly.

"I plan for contingencies," Thorne replied, standing up and walking back to the window. "Julian is hosting a private preview for investors on Thursday night at his private suite near the docks. He'll be surrounded by people who kiss his ring. I need someone inside who can access his private terminal while he's distracted."
