Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

"They're here!" I called out, my heart hammering against my ribs as I grabbed the handle of the heavy metal door, pulling it shut and throwing the deadbolt just as the first figures in tactical gear leaped from the vehicles outside.
"Twenty seconds!" Daniel shouted from the terminal, his fingers locked onto the enter key as the progress bar crept toward the final tick. *95%... 98%... 100%.*
A heavy blow slammed against the exterior steel door, followed by the deafening crack of a breaching charge. The cinder-block walls shuddered, plaster dust raining down upon our heads. Vance braced his shoulder against the doorframe, leveling his service revolver toward the weak wooden panel as it began to splinter inward.
"Upload complete!" Daniel roared, ripping the micro-SD card from the terminal just as the front door blasted off its hinges in a cloud of smoke and splintered wood.
Before the corporate fixers could level their rifles, the distinctive sirens of state police cruisers and federal independent investigators echoed up the access road from behind them, their red and blue emergency lights flashing violently against the pine trees. Dozens of armed state troopers spilled out of their vehicles, weapons drawn, surrounding the corporate agents before they could react.
"Federal Marshal Service! Drop your weapons! Drop them now!" a booming voice echoed across the clearing.
The lead fixer hesitated, looking from the surrounding federal agents back to the open relay terminal where Daniel stood holding the infant twins against his chest. Slowly, grudgingly, the man let his rifle slip from his hands and hit the dirt. Other agents swarmed the utility building, securing the perimeter and disarming the remaining operatives.
Vance lowered his revolver with a slow, satisfied exhale, wiping soot from his sleeve. "Looks like your timing was just about perfect, son," he muttered, clapping Daniel on the shoulder.

Within minutes, medics and investigators flooded the station. A senior federal investigator stepped forward, his eyes scanning the glowing terminal screen before resting on Daniel and me. "Mr. Vance? We received the complete audit stream. Every shell company, every payoff, every corporate directive. The arrest warrants for the executive board are already being signed by a federal judge."
Daniel looked down at me, the tension of the past two weeks finally draining from his posture. He reached out with his free hand, intertwining his fingers with mine as the morning sun broke over the mountain ridge, washing the dark alley memories away in a flood of clean, golden light.
