Chapter 8 - The Vault at First Light

The morning air carried the sharp, damp scent of early autumn as Elena wheeled me out through the discreet side service exit of the manor. The sky above the driveway was a pale, washed-out gray, and the gravel crunched softly beneath the tires of the sedan. The estate looked peaceful, its white brick facade gleaming in the early light, entirely belying the financial warfare being waged within its walls.

The drive into the city took forty minutes. Downtown was just beginning to stir, delivery trucks idling outside corner bakeries and commuters hurrying along the concrete sidewalks with umbrellas tilted against a light drizzle. Elena handled the wheelchair with practiced efficiency, lifting it over the high curb outside the granite-pillared facade of the First National Commercial Bank and guiding me smoothly through the heavy revolving doors into the soaring marble lobby.

At nine o'clock sharp, we approached the oak-paneled desk of the branch director, a man named Arthur Vance—no relation to Richard, though cut from the same cautious, polished cloth. Arthur looked up from a stack of loan applications, his professional smile firmly in place as he prepared to offer standard corporate condolences for my situation.

"Mr. Julian," Arthur said, rising halfway from his leather chair and extending a hand. "It's... unexpected to see you in person. Usually, Mr. Richard handles your affairs on your behalf."

"Richard Vance represents my legal counsel, Arthur, not my corporate identity," I said calmly, not taking his hand, letting my silence stretch until he awkwardly withdrew it and sat back down. "I am here to exercise an executive master audit on all Tier-1 operational accounts associated with the Julian Foundation and my personal holdings."

Arthur's smile faltered, replaced by a twitch of professional anxiety. He glanced past me to Elena, who stood quietly by the handle of my wheelchair, then back to my face. "Well, sir, given your recent medical leave and the temporary conservatorship paperwork filed by Mrs. Eleanor—"

"The paperwork has not been finalized or approved by a federal judge, Arthur," I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the absolute authority that had built the foundation in the first place. "Which means my corporate seal and master credentials remain fully active. Open the master terminal. Now."

For three agonizing minutes, Arthur hesitated, his fingers hovering over his keyboard as he weighed the risk of crossing Eleanor against the statutory liability of denying a primary account holder direct access. The silence in the private alcove was absolute, broken only by the faint hum of the building's climate control system.

Then, Arthur typed a sequence into his terminal. A soft chime sounded from the machine, and the color drained from his face as the real-time ledger of secondary transfers populated his screen.

"Good God," Arthur whispered, staring at the frozen rows of unauthorized payouts directed toward the shell companies. "These accounts... they've been systematically drained over the last six months."

"Frozen them, Arthur," I commanded quietly. "Freeze every secondary operational fund, corporate debit card, and discretionary line of credit linked to Mrs. Eleanor's name and Richard Vance's firm. Immediately."

Arthur swallowed hard, his hands shaking slightly as he clicked through the authorization menus. A red confirmation banner flashed across the monitor.

"Done," Arthur breathed, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "The secondary accounts are locked. No withdrawals, no transfers. Complete freeze."

I looked down at the dark blue blanket draped over my knees, running my hand across the rough wool. The first pillar of Eleanor's world had just collapsed.
