Chapter 12 - Face To Face With Dominic

The murmur of the foundation ballroom drifted around me like a chilled tide. Crystal chandeliers caught the amber light, casting glints across the expanse of polished herringbone oak flooring where high-society guests mingled in tuxedos and silk. I stood near a marble pillar, my fingers resting lightly against the cool, veined stone. My breath remained steady, drawn from a place of quiet resolve I hadn't possessed a week ago inside the private boutique salon.

Across the room, the crowd parted smoothly, a familiar hydraulic shift that always preceded his arrival. Dominic moved with practiced ease, wearing a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that caught the light, his dark hair neatly parted. He held a flute of champagne in one hand, smiling politely at a local bank president before his gaze locked onto mine.

His eyes hardened by imperceptible degrees, though the smile remained fixed on his lips like a painted seam. He altered his course, gliding across the floor with the unhurried grace of a man who believed every room belonged to him by right of design.

"There you are," Dominic said softly as he stopped a few feet away. His voice carried that familiar, smooth cadence that had once made me feel sheltered, but now sounded entirely hollow. "The board has been asking after you. And your wardrobe choice tonight is... unconventional, to say the least."

He glanced down at the minimalist silhouette of my gown, his eyes narrowing as he searched for the standard-issue foundation dress he had expected me to wear.

"I decided to wear something else," I said evenly. I didn't step back, nor did I lower my gaze to the floor as I once would have.

Dominic took a half-step closer, lowering his voice so it didn't carry past the immediate perimeter of our pillar. "We don't improvise tonight, Clara. You know how these events operate. Every detail is curated. People are watching."

"Let them watch," I replied.

A tiny muscle twitched near Dominic's jawline. His public mask of charming control faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by the sharp, calculating glare I had spent years trying to avoid.

"You've been spending time away from the estate," he murmured, his tone dropping into a low, acidic warning. "And you've been listening to things you shouldn't. We are going to leave through the side exit in ten minutes, get into the town car, and we are going to discuss your recent behavior."

"I'm not going anywhere with you, Dominic," I said, my voice cutting through the ambient hum of the ballroom with absolute clarity.

Dominic's smile vanished entirely. Before he could lean in further or reach out to take my arm, a solid shadow shifted into the space beside me.

Julian stepped into the perimeter of our conversation, wearing his sharp black suit with the unbuttoned collar. He didn't crowd Dominic, but his presence was an immovable wall, establishing a protective boundary that made it impossible for Dominic to close the distance. Julian's expression was calm, his gaze steady as he looked directly into Dominic's tightened face.

"She gave you her answer," Julian said, his voice quiet but carrying an undeniable weight.

Dominic looked from Julian to me, his chest rising with a sharp, controlled breath. For the first time all evening, the foundation president looked entirely out of his depth, realizing the narrative he had carefully scripted for years was slipping right out of his hands.
