Chapter 1 - The Silver Tureen

The silver tray shook against my forearm, the heavy weight of the porcelain tureen pulling down my shoulder. I tried to steady my grip, but the polished rim clipped the edge of the rimmed bowl with a sharp clatter that cut through the murmur of the dining room. Warm candlelight flickered across the dark wood table, illuminating the startled faces around the setting. The crystal chandelier overhead cast long, fractured shadows across the white linen tablecloth, magnifying every tiny imperfection in my movements. I had practiced this walk a dozen times in the quiet corridor outside, convincing myself that my hands would remain steady, that the disguise would hold, and that nobody in this room would look closely enough to care about a hired maid.
"Careful," Julian said, his voice low and flat from the head of the table. He rested his chin on his tattooed hand, his dark hair catching the amber glow of the chandeliers. His eyes never left me, carrying a quiet, assessing weight that made my chest tighten.
My stomach dropped into a cold void. I winced, looking down at the white linen cloth as I tried to mask the tremor in my fingers. "I'm sorry," I murmured, keeping my left hand tucked slightly behind the fold of my apron, hidden beneath the thick black fabric of the glove. The fabric was rough against my skin, a constant reminder of the safety I was desperately trying to buy with my silence.
The silver serving tray shuddered again as I struggled to balance the heavy porcelain bowls. Across from Julian, Clara adjusted the diamond necklace at her collar, her off-the-shoulder red silk dress catching the light as she offered a smooth, practiced smile to defuse the rising tension at the table. She understood the unspoken rules of this estate better than anyone, knowing how to smooth over rough edges before a scandal could take root in the opulent dining room.
"Sorry, she caught it in the linen closet," Clara interjected smoothly, her tone effortless and polished, designed to dismiss the incident as a clumsy mishap by unskilled domestic staff.

Julian didn't look at Clara. His eyes remained fixed on me, narrowing slightly as he digested the excuse. The silence stretched across the long room, thick with unspoken suspicion. He leaned forward, breaking the quiet with a direct, piercing question that demanded an immediate accounting. "Why are you wearing one glove?"
The air left my lungs. Every eye at the table turned toward my left hand. I could feel the coarse wool of the glove pressing against the scarred skin underneath, a physical barrier keeping my past buried from the world. Julian didn't wait for an answer that wasn't coming. His gaze darkened, shifting from curiosity to absolute command. "Take it off." The words hung in the air, leaving me with nowhere to run as my anonymity vanished.
