Chapter 6 - The Seal on the Kitchen Counter

The aroma of freshly ground dark roast coffee filled the kitchen, cutting through the scent of lemon cleaner and old marble. I poured the steaming liquid into a heavy ceramic mug, setting it beside the heavy cream envelope on the white counter. Mr. Moretti had moved back to the window, watching the first pale streaks of dawn break over the manicured hedges of the estate courtyard.

He turned slowly, walking back toward the island. He didn't pick up the coffee immediately; instead, his gaze dropped to the wax seal on the envelope. The red wax bore the impression of a jagged, interlocking geometric design—a mark I hadn't seen before, but one that clearly carried significant weight.

"You're watching this," Moretti observed, not unkindly, as he noticed my eyes lingering on the crest.

"I can't help it," I admitted, keeping my hands occupied by wiping down the counter with a clean linen cloth. "In a place like this, mail that arrives at three-forty in the morning via the gate lodge doesn't look like regular correspondence."

Moretti finally picked up the mug, taking a slow sip without breaking his gaze. "It isn't. It's a message from someone who believes they have a claim on the people working inside these walls. Someone who thinks my domestic arrangements are open for public negotiation."

"Is it about me?" I asked, my voice dropping to a near-whisper as the reality of my situation pressed down on me from all sides.

"It's about control," Moretti corrected, his tone cold and flat. He reached out with his free hand, breaking the red wax seal with a sharp snap that echoed loudly in the quiet kitchen. He pulled out a thick cardstock note, reading the contents silently. As his eyes scanned the lines, the muscles in his jaw tightened into a rigid line. Whatever was written on that paper had crossed a line he didn't allow anyone to cross.

"Who sent it?" I asked, unable to stop the question from slipping past my lips.

Moretti folded the paper deliberately, sliding it back into the envelope before looking directly at me. "Someone who is about to learn that jurisdiction inside this estate begins and ends with me. Julian!"

The kitchen doors clicked open instantly, as if the young butler had been standing guard just outside the threshold. "Yes, sir?"

"Call the security detail on the lower perimeter. Tell them to review every camera feed from the eastern gate between midnight and now," Moretti instructed, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "And inform the head of logistics that our scheduled deliveries for tomorrow are moving up by six hours. We are tightening access."

"Right away, Mr. Moretti," Julian said, casting a quick, apprehensive glance at me before turning and disappearing back down the corridor.

Moretti turned his attention back to me, the ambient morning light catching the sharp planes of his face. He pushed the unopened envelope slightly toward the edge of the counter, distancing himself from it, but his presence remained an impenetrable wall between me and whatever threat was gathering outside the gates.

"You finish your shift, and you stay inside the main residence," Moretti commanded quietly, leaving no room for argument. "No trips to the outer annexes, no running errands in the village. If anyone asks for you by name at the service entrance, you notify me directly."

"And if they don't ask?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. "If they just come in?"

Moretti set his coffee mug down on the marble, the heavy ceramic making a sharp clink against the stone. He stepped closer, his eyes holding mine with a fierce, unwavering intensity that made the surrounding kitchen fade away into silence.

"Nobody gets past the kitchen door without my permission," he said softly. "Eat your breakfast, finish your work, and let me handle the rest."
