Chapter 14 - The Steps of Justice

The late afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the sprawling granite steps of the federal courthouse downtown. Sirens still wailed in the distance, but here, beneath the towering neoclassical columns, the chaotic roar of the city seemed to recede into a solemn hum. Pedestrians hurried past along the wide sidewalks, oblivious to the quiet drama unfolding on the stone platform. I stood between Elena and the man, my worn boots planted firmly against the cold marble, feeling the steady weight of the documents resting securely inside our bags.
Two men in dark federal suits stepped out from beneath the massive portico, their badges catching the amber light as they approached us with purposeful strides. The lead marshal, an older man with graying hair and a sharp, observant gaze, stopped directly in front of us. His eyes flicked from Elena's soot-stained jacket to the man's ruined designer suit, instantly reading the story written in our exhaustion and defiance.
"Agent Miller," the marshal said, his voice clipped and professional. "We received an encrypted data drop matching the routing protocols of the estate's internal network ten minutes ago. Are you prepared to make a formal statement?"
The man straightened his shoulders, the ink tattoos on his neck visible above his dark shirt collar as he lifted his chin with unyielding resolve. He didn't look back at the city skyline or the opulent towers of the foundation that had built his empire. Instead, he reached into his inner pocket, pulled out the titanium multi-tool and the master keycard to the estate's private vault, and placed them deliberately into the open palm of the federal agent.

"Every shell company, every diverted asset, and every illicit ledger is in that transmission," the man said, his voice ringing clear and steady against the stone steps. "I am submitting myself for full investigation, effective immediately. Let's begin."
Elena stepped forward beside him, handing over the physical flash drives without a word. I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with them, feeling a profound, terrifying lightness take hold in my chest. The gilded cage of the mansion, the endless corridors of white marble, and the suffocating silence of servitude were finally broken. The law was taking its course, not through secret whispers in the dark, but in the harsh, undeniable light of day.
