THE VALMONT BETRAYAL / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO KEPT THE RECORDING

The address Duvall had whispered led to a small apartment above a bookstore in the old district of Geneva.

Daniel Mercer traveled there with Claire while Adrien remained under medical supervision. The decision infuriated him, but Dr. Morel had been clear: the healing fractures could not tolerate uncontrolled weight-bearing, and the recent nerve symptoms made a long journey unwise.

Adrien hated being physically limited.

Yet for the first time, he was beginning to understand that accepting medical precautions was not the same as surrendering his independence.

He spent the morning working with a physical therapist.

The exercises were modest.

Ankle movements.

Gentle muscle activation.

Carefully assisted transfers.

But each successful movement felt like a small victory.

Sophie stood nearby, encouraging him without exaggerating his progress.

When he completed the final exercise, Adrien looked at her.

"That was harder than negotiating a billion-dollar merger."

She smiled.

"Your muscles don't care how much money you have."

He laughed.

It was the first genuine laugh she had heard from him in weeks.

Meanwhile, Daniel and Claire reached the Geneva apartment.

The bookstore owner directed them upstairs.

A woman in her late fifties opened the door.

She had short gray hair and sharp green eyes.

"Madeleine Arnaud?" Daniel asked.

The woman studied them.

"Who wants to know?"

Claire introduced herself.

"We represent Adrien Valmont."

Madeleine's expression changed.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she stepped aside.

"Come in."

The apartment was small but carefully organized. Books lined every wall, and several locked filing cabinets stood beneath the windows.

Madeleine offered no refreshments.

Instead, she asked a single question.

"Is Adrien alive?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

Madeleine closed her eyes.

"Thank God."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Why would you think otherwise?"

"Because the people who tried to kill him don't usually leave unfinished business."

Claire felt a chill.

"You knew about the crash?"

Madeleine nodded.

"Étienne warned me it might happen."

She opened a locked cabinet and removed a small metal case.

Inside were photographs, documents, and an encrypted storage device.

"Before I show you anything, I need to know whether Adrien understands what he's dealing with."

Claire answered carefully.

"He knows Gabriel Delacroix received money from Victor's investment company. He knows someone may have tampered with his orthopedic brace. And he knows his wife and father may have survived their reported deaths."

Madeleine stared at her.

"Then he knows almost everything."

"Almost?"

Madeleine looked toward the window.

"He doesn't know why they disappeared."

She connected the storage device to an offline computer.

A video appeared.

Étienne Valmont sat at a wooden desk.

He looked older than Adrien remembered, but unmistakably alive.

His silver hair was thinner.

His face was lined with exhaustion.

Yet his eyes were the same.

Madeleine started the recording.

"My son," Étienne began, "if you're watching this, then the people I tried to stop have finally turned against you."

Adrien watched remotely from his hospital room.

Sophie sat beside him.

The sight of his father brought tears to his eyes.

Étienne continued.

"I made mistakes. Terrible mistakes. I trusted Gabriel Delacroix because he saved my life when I was young. I allowed him access to our family's medical foundation, and I failed to question the financial arrangements he created."

The older man's voice trembled.

"By the time I discovered what was happening, millions had been diverted through shell companies. Medical equipment was being sold at inflated prices to clinics that served vulnerable patients. Some devices had been approved using falsified quality records."

Adrien stared at the screen.

His father lowered his head.

"I wanted to expose everything. But Gabriel had powerful partners, and one of them was inside our family."

Adrien whispered, "Victor."

Étienne continued.

"Victor was ambitious. He wanted the company. But he was not the architect of the scheme."

Adrien's stomach tightened.

"Then who was?"

The recording continued.

"Émilie discovered the truth before I did. She found documents showing that Gabriel had used our charitable foundation to conceal payments connected to defective medical products."

Étienne paused.

"She wanted to go to the authorities immediately."

His expression became haunted.

"Then Gabriel threatened Lila."

Sophie covered her mouth.

Adrien felt his chest tighten.

"Émilie agreed to disappear while we gathered enough evidence to protect our family. I arranged a false death announcement with the help of people I believed I could trust."

Claire watched the recording in silence.

Étienne continued.

"But Gabriel discovered our plan. He intercepted our communications and used our disappearance to strengthen his control."

The older man leaned toward the camera.

"Adrien, I know you will hate me for allowing you to believe we were dead. I deserve that anger. But I never stopped trying to come home."

His voice broke.

"Every day, I have wondered whether I sacrificed my family to save it."

Adrien's eyes filled with tears.

Then Étienne said something unexpected.

"There is one person you must not trust."

Adrien leaned forward.

"Gabriel," he whispered.

But his father shook his head in the recording.

"Gabriel is dangerous. Victor is greedy. But neither of them could have carried out this operation without someone who controlled our legal and financial records."

Adrien went still.

Étienne looked directly into the camera.

"Adrien, the person who betrayed us was—"

The recording abruptly stopped.

Daniel checked the file.

"That's the end."

Madeleine shook her head.

"No. There was more."

She examined the storage device.

Then her face changed.

"Someone has deleted the final segment."

Claire looked at her.

"Who had access?"

Madeleine hesitated.

"Only three people."

"Name them."

"Étienne. Myself."

She swallowed.

"And Émilie."

At that moment, Madeleine's phone vibrated.

She looked at the message.

Her face turned white.

Claire leaned forward.

"What is it?"

Madeleine slowly turned the screen toward them.

A photograph showed Étienne Valmont sitting in a chair, his wrists restrained.

Beneath it was a message.

May you like

Tell Adrien his father has twenty-four hours left.
