Chapter 15: The Third Wish

The morning sun filtered through the canopy of ancient oaks at Greenfield Park, casting warm, golden patches across the damp grass. The air smelled of wet earth and fallen leaves, a clean, sharp scent that washed away the stale, heavy atmosphere of the estate we had left behind weeks ago. A small wooden park bench sat near the edge of the duck pond, where the water rippled gently in the morning breeze.

Ellie sat on the middle of the bench, swinging her legs back and forth in her yellow dress, her small fingers clutching the final gold coin we had recovered from the dark gift box in Vince's study. The other two coins were locked away in a federal evidence vault, but we had kept this one—not as currency, but as a small talisman of everything we had survived and overcome.

Vince stood leaning against the wooden backrest beside her, his dark hair falling slightly across his forehead, the intricate ink of his neck tattoos visible above the collar of a simple gray sweater. He wasn't wearing his black collared shirt anymore; the sharp edges of his mourning attire had been replaced by the casual clothes of a man who was finally learning how to live in the daylight.

"Are you thinking about what you want to ask for, El?" Vince asked softly, crouching down so his eyes were level with hers.

Ellie looked down at the heavy gold coin in her palm, turning it over to catch the sunlight glinting off the polished metal edge. During the long weeks of court hearings and safe house relocations, she had used her first two wishes to keep us safe and to bring her mother's truth out into the open for the world to see. Now, the weight of the past seemed miles away, replaced by the quiet promise of an ordinary morning.

She looked up at Vince, her curly hair bouncing around her shoulders, and then turned her gaze toward me as I stood nearby holding our picnic basket. A slow, bright smile spread across her face—the kind of unburdened, joyful smile I had never seen on her tiny face during all my months working in the Sterling household.

"I don't need to wish for anything big anymore," Ellie said, her voice clear and sweet in the quiet park air. "My first wish kept us together, and my second wish chased the bad men away." She paused, squeezing the gold coin tightly for a second before letting it drop into Vince's outstretched palm with a soft, metallic clink. "My third wish is just... for us to stay right here, together, forever."

Vince let out a long, ragged breath, a sudden, genuine smile breaking across his features as he reached out and scooped her up into his arms, spinning her around in a circle as she giggled with pure delight. I stepped in close, wrapping my arms around both of them as the morning sun warmed our backs. We had walked through the dark shadows of grief, fear, and institutional power, but standing there by the quiet pond, I knew the hardest part was behind us. The future wasn't written in ledgers, hush money, or secret boxes anymore; it belonged entirely to the three of us.
