Chapter 15 - The Open Road

The grand living room was entirely empty of armed guards, panicked supervisors, and hovering tension. The morning sun poured through the towering arched windows, casting long, warm golden rays across the polished marble floor and the ornate gold furniture. The large crystal chandelier caught the light, sending dancing prisms of color across the silent walls. It looked breathtaking, peaceful, and utterly hollow.

I stood before the large antique mirror near the foyer, wearing my own simple civilian clothes—a worn denim jacket and dark denim jeans—carrying my rolled-up black domestic uniform in a compact canvas tote bag. My reflection looked older, sharper around the edges, but the hollow, hunted look in my eyes was gone, replaced by a quiet, unyielding clarity.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me on the marble. Sophia stood in the doorway, holding her worn teddy bear in one hand while her other hand rested securely inside the palm of her maternal aunt, a kind-eyed woman who had arrived an hour earlier on the first flight from Chicago. Brutus trotted faithfully at their side, his massive tail giving a gentle, rhythmic wag as he looked up at me.

"Are you coming with us?" Sophia asked softly, her voice small and hopeful in the grand, high-ceilinged room.

I knelt down, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead, and smiled. "I have my own road to walk, sweet girl. But I'll never be far away."

She threw her small arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder for one long, fierce moment before pulling back with a brave, bright smile. Together, along with the aunt and the massive dog who had saved us both, we walked out the front mahogany doors for the very last time.

The heavy iron gates stood wide open to the world, framing a stretch of winding county road that led down through the green hills toward the open highway. The morning air was crisp, clean, and entirely free of shadow. I didn't look back at the marble pillars or the sunlit mansion as I stepped down the steps and onto the sidewalk, walking forward into a future I had finally earned with my own two hands.
