Chapter 11 - Returning to the Scene Under Winter Skies

The sign above the upscale restaurant glowed with a warm, amber neon light against the darkening winter sky, casting long reflections across the freshly plowed snowbanks lining the curb. Exactly two weeks after our first encounter at table four, Julian pushed open the heavy glass doors, stepping out of the biting wind into the familiar dining room dominated by the massive crystal chandelier. The maître d' started to step forward with a practiced apology about reservations, but stopped dead when he recognized Julian's dark suit and the calm, composed woman walking calmly beside him.

"Table four," Julian said quietly, leaving no room for argument.

We were seated beneath the large arched window where the falling snow drifted lazily past the glass, blurring the city lights into soft halos of gold and blue. The restaurant was half-empty, the ambient murmur of polite conversation washing over us like distant surf. I wore my classic black maid uniform once more—crisp white lace collar, apron, and headpiece—my dark hair pulled back into its neat bun. Only this time, I wasn't carrying a routine dinner order on the round silver tray.

Julian sat back, his dark eyes warm and attentive as he watched me approach his table with measured, deliberate steps. I held the silver serving tray with both hands, the heavy domed lid hiding its contents from the curious glances of the neighboring patrons.

"Good evening, sir," I said, my voice carrying that same quiet, intense cadence from our first night. "For ten years, no one has answered this question."

Julian smiled, leaning his elbows on the white tablecloth, his gold wristwatch gleaming in the candlelight. "The third word isn't announced that way," he replied smoothly, completing the ritual we had spent a fortnight refining.

I lifted the domed silver lid with a smooth, practiced motion, setting it aside to reveal a freshly bound, leather-covered volume resting on the silver plate—the complete, published translation of the fifth migration, bearing both our names embossed in gold leaf on the cover.

Julian stared down at the book, his breath catching in his throat as the reality of what we had achieved finally settled over him. He looked up at me, his eyes wide with a profound, unshakeable awe. The ten-year search was over, and the truth was finally out in the open.
