Chapter 1 - The Silver Tray and the Hidden Recess

The crystal flutes chimed against one another, a delicate, high-pitched ringing that cut through the low murmur of the ballroom chatter echoing from the eastern wing. My fingers, encased in bright yellow rubber gloves that felt entirely too loud against the somber black of my maid dress and white apron, balanced the heavy silver tray with practiced care. My brown hair was pinned back tightly, pulled away from my neck as I walked purposefully down the mansion hallway. The floor beneath my sensible black shoes was polished dark wood, flanked by towering white columns and exposed brick alcoves where heavy chandeliers cast a warm, flattering glow over the plaster moldings.

It was supposed to be a standard catering rotation for the foundation gala—fill the flutes, weave through the guests, collect the empty stems, and keep the service invisible. But as I passed the third brick alcove, the ambient hum of the party dissolved.

A sharp, unmistakable intake of breath sounded from behind the masonry, followed instantly by a faint, wretched sob.

I stopped dead in my tracks. The silver tray wobbled, the champagne sloshing dangerously against the rims of the six glasses. My breath hitched in my throat. I looked back down the long corridor toward the ballroom doors, but the hallway was empty, swallowed by the cavernous quiet of the private family quarters.

The sound came again—a muffled, whimpering breath, unmistakably human and unmistakably small.

My heart slammed against my ribs. Without thinking, I turned sharply toward the side mahogany console table and dropped the silver tray. The glasses shattered instantly, the expensive champagne splashing across the polished wood and pooling over the edge to drip onto the rug. I didn't care. My focus locked onto the heavy baroque framed painting hanging on the exposed brick wall.

The painting—a massive, gloomy oil landscape encased in ornate, dark-gilded wood—hung slightly askew. I grabbed the heavy wooden frame with both gloved hands and shoved it hard. With a heavy, metallic clatter of concealed hinges, the entire canvas swung outward, revealing a dark, recessed cavity cut deep into the structural brickwork of the mansion.

I leaned in, my heart pounding in my ears, and peered into the blackness of the hidden recess.

A young boy sat huddled under a gray woolen blanket, shivering violently. Piled around him in the cramped brick space were dozens of empty plastic water bottles and crumpled wrappers. He looked up, his face pale and tear-streaked in the dim light spilling from the hallway, and reached out a trembling hand.

"Please help me!" he whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion and terror.

The words hit me like physical blow, freezing the blood in my veins. Before I could reach out to pull him from the dark, heavy footsteps echoed furiously against the hardwood floor behind me.

"What on earth are you doing?"

May you like

The sharp, panicked voice cracked through the corridor. I spun around, my boots slipping slightly on the spilled champagne. Down the hallway, a wealthy man in a tailored midnight-black tuxedo and an elegant woman in a sweeping emerald silk gown were rushing toward me, their faces twisted in absolute, unfiltered panic. The man's jaw was clenched so tight his skin looked translucent, and the woman's hands were clawing frantically at the air as they sprinted away from the ballroom noise and straight toward the alcove.
