Chapter 12: Return to the Wood-Paneled Room

The autumn rain was sheeting down against the long windows of the Vance estate when the county transport van pulled up the gravel drive, flanked by two marked patrol cruisers with their light bars dark. I sat in the front passenger seat next to Sheriff Miller, watching the familiar double doors of the mansion loom out of the twilight. Inside the back of the van, two county paramedics monitored Arthur’s stable oxygen levels, ensuring he made the court-ordered transition back to his own bed under neutral supervision.
As the van rolled to a stop, the front doors swung open. Julian stepped out onto the wide stone porch, wearing his olive-green suit, his face contorted in an ugly mixture of rage and disbelief. He took two long strides down the steps, raising a hand to block our path as Miller stepped out into the pouring rain.
"What is the meaning of this?" Julian shouted over the drumming roar of the downpour, his voice cracking with fury. "This is private property! You have no legal standing to bring him back here under these conditions!"
Miller didn't flinch. He walked straight toward Julian, stopping just inches from the younger man's chest. "Step aside, Mr. Vance. I am executing a protective custody order issued by Judge Holloway twenty minutes ago. As long as Arthur Vance resides in this estate, his care is under court-appointed medical supervision, and you are legally barred from entering the east wing."
Julian's eyes widened in sheer disbelief, darting past Miller to look at me as I stepped out of the van with my canvas bag over my shoulder. "You," Julian hissed, pointing a trembling finger at me. "You brought the county police into this? You ungrateful, interfering little—"
"Enough," Miller interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a low, authoritative rumble that brooked no argument. He motioned to the two deputies in the cruiser behind us. "Escort Mr. Vance to the perimeter patio. If he breaches the fifty-foot buffer zone around the double doors, place him in cuffs for interfering with a court-mandated medical transfer."

Julian was grabbed by the arms before he could lunge forward, his expensive olive-green suit soaked through with rain as the deputies bodily moved him away from the entrance. He spat curses into the damp air, his face pale with fury as the reality of his crumbling control finally set in.
I walked past him without a word, my boots clicking against the wet stone steps. The heavy double doors opened, welcoming me back into the dimly lit, wood-paneled foyer where the crystal chandelier cast long, dramatic shadows across the wainscoting. We were back where we started, but the balance of power inside the mansion had completely inverted.
