Chapter 13 - Morning Light on the Gilded Moldings

The first gray streaks of daylight filtered through the tall lace-curtained windows, cutting sharp angles across the ornate European bedroom. Outside the heavy oak doors, the muffled sound of approaching footsteps broke the heavy silence of dawn. I stood quietly in the deep shadows near the marble fireplace, my hand resting against the cold brass poker, while Julian adjusted the final wiring harness behind the cream-tufted headboard. The red LED modules blinked rhythmically, casting an eerie crimson glow over the gilded moldings and the cream velvet upholstery we had sliced open days ago.
The heavy doors swung open with a sharp click, and Marcus strode into the room flanked by three armed security guards in black suits. His tailored charcoal suit looked immaculate despite the early hour, but his face was tight with cold fury. He stopped dead in his tracks as his eyes darted from the torn headboard to Julian, who stood up slowly from the floor, wiping his hands on a dark silk handkerchief.
"You've made a catastrophic mistake coming back here, Julian," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave as he gestured for the guards to raise their weapons. The metallic click of safety catches echoed off the high ceilings. "The board is already convening downtown. Your signature is on the transfer orders, and this pathetic little stunt won't change a thing."
Julian didn't flinch. He walked over to the antique mahogany desk, picked up the silver letter opener, and calmly set it down beside the master control console. "You always were too impatient to check the secondary servers, Marcus. You thought buying the security firm gave you absolute control over the estate."
Marcus sneered, taking a step forward. "Men, secure them both. Take the hardware."

Before the guards could cross the Persian rug, Julian pressed a single key on the console. Instantly, every hidden monitor, tablet, and boardroom screen across the foundation’s global network flickered to life. The high-definition broadcast captured Marcus’s panicked expression in real-time, beaming his voice, his face, and his corporate confession directly to the fifty members of the board waiting in the downtown tower.
"Check your tablets, Marcus," Julian said softly. "The entire network has the financial ledgers. And they're listening to every word you just said."
