Chapter 14: Unfolding the Uniform

The morning sun poured through the high Gothic windows of the estate's main parlor, dusting the polished wood floor with bright, golden motes. I stood by the tall mantelpiece, wearing the crisp black-and-white uniform that had defined every waking hour of my existence since I first crossed the threshold of the Romano mansion. The house felt lighter today, the oppressive shadow of Julian's threat finally lifted by the ironclad validity of the Zurich documents.
Footsteps approached down the long hallway, measured and deliberate. Dante entered the room, his black suit sharp, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar as always. He stopped a few paces away, his dark eyes sweeping over me with an intense, quiet evaluation that made my breath catch.
"Julian's legal team formally withdrew the injunction at dawn," Dante said, his voice carrying a rich, resonant warmth. "The estate is secure. Sophie's future is safe."
"I'm glad," I breathed, looking down at my hands.
Dante closed the distance between us, stopping just inches away. I could smell the faint trace of cedar and dark coffee on him. He reached out, his tattooed fingers gently brushing against the stiff white fabric of my collar, his touch so light it felt like an electric shock.
"You haven't been just a maid in this house for a very long time," Dante said, his voice dropping into a rough, vulnerable whisper. "You saved her, and in a very real way, you saved me from drowning behind these walls."
He lowered his hand, his gaze locking onto mine with an absolute, undeniable sincerity. "I want you to take off the uniform. Not to leave—never to leave—but to stay here as my equal, as Sophie's mother in every way that matters. I want to build a real home within these stone walls, if you're willing to share it with me."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but a slow, radiant smile broke across my face. I reached up, my fingers brushing against the lapel of his jacket. The cold isolation of the Romano estate had finally melted away, replaced by the fierce, protective warmth of a future we were choosing together.

"I'm not going anywhere, Dante," I whispered.
He broke into a sudden, deep chuckle—warm and completely unburdened—and pulled me gently into his arms as the morning light wrapped around us both.
