Chapter 8 - Confrontation in the Dust and a Sudden Reprieve

Marco closed the distance between us with measured, predatory strides, his polished dress shoes clicking sharply against the concrete floor. I instinctively backed up until my lower back hit the edge of the heavy mahogany desk, my fingers searching blindly behind me for the iron ledger box. The canvas bag containing my great-grandmother's journal was slung tight across my chest, heavy as lead.

"You're trespassing on private trust property, Tessa," Marco said, stopping just a few feet away. The scent of expensive cologne mixed sharply with the stale dust of the room. "The council back East owns this entire parcel. Salvatore has no legal right to hand out keys to historical sites, and you have no business digging through things that were buried for a reason."

"This isn't just corporate property, Marco, and you know it," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the rapid pounding of my heart. "This is where my great-grandmother worked before she was forced out. You and the council can hide behind your legal threats all you want, but I'm not giving back the journal, and I'm not walking away."

Marco let out a cold, humorless scoff, reaching inside his jacket as if to pull out a document. "You think this is about a history lesson? Salvatore is old, and his sentimentality is going to destroy everything the family has built over forty years. If I have to make sure you never step foot in an upscale restaurant again to protect this operation, I will do it without a second thought."

Before I could retort, the harsh, shrill ring of a cell phone broke the tension. Marco froze, his hand pausing inside his suit jacket. He pulled out his phone, glanced at the glowing screen, and his expression instantly darkened. He hit speaker with a sharp swipe of his thumb.

"Marco," Don Salvatore's deep, unmistakable voice resonated through the quiet room, carrying an edge of absolute authority. "Where are you?"

Marco swallowed hard, his eyes darting back to me before he answered. "I'm handling the situation on Ninth Street, Don Salvatore. Securing the perimeter as the council requires."

"You will return to the downtown office immediately," Salvatore replied, his tone chillingly flat. "Leave Miss Paolini alone. If you touch a single hair on her head, you answer directly to me. Do you understand?"

A heavy silence stretched between them for three agonizing seconds. Marco's jaw clenched so tight the muscle twitched visibly in his cheek. "Understood, Don Salvatore," Marco muttered through gritted teeth. He ended the call without waiting for a reply, slipped the phone back into his pocket, and glared at me one last time. "This isn't over, kid," he warned, turning on his heel and marching back out into the blinding sunlight.
