Chapter 13: Walking Across the Threshold

The silence in the entryway of the coastal house was absolute, thick enough to muffle the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the rocks outside. Alessandro stood upright, his shoulders squared within the soft fabric of his gray sweater, his boots planted firmly on the hardwood floor. The metal wheels of the leather-backed chair remained behind him, empty and forgotten.

The hired physician stood frozen near the coat rack, his silver-rimmed glasses slipping slightly down the bridge of his nose. He blinked once, twice, peering through the lenses as if trying to adjust the focus of a reality he refused to believe.

"That's... that's not neurologically possible," the physician muttered, his voice dropping into a dry whisper. He took a sudden, involuntary half-step backward, his heel catching slightly on the edge of the braided rug before he regained his balance. His hands remained pinned to his sides, fingers twitching slightly as though reaching for a clipboard or a medical chart that suddenly held no meaning.

Across from him, the elegantly dressed blonde woman in the blue velvet gown stared with wide, unblinking eyes. The pristine composure that had shielded her through months of boardrooms, galas, and legal depositions cracked visibly down the center. Her manicured fingers dug hard into the silver clasp of her leather handbag, the knuckles turning stark white against the dark leather.

"This is a trick," she said, her voice sharp, though it lacked the steady, chilling authority she had carried into the house just minutes earlier. It vibrated with a thin, brittle edge of panic. "Alessandro, sit down. You're straining yourself. You'll collapse—this is absurd."

Alessandro didn't answer her immediately. He drew a slow, deep breath, his chest expanding beneath his shirt, testing the quiet strength returning to his frame. His gaze remained locked on the wooden threshold just a few feet ahead of him, where the interior floorboards met the open doorway leading out toward the porch and the open air.

"My legs are not a legal brief," Alessandro said, his voice deep, steady, and utterly devoid of anger. "And my recovery is not subject to your board approval."

With deliberate, agonizingly slow care, Alessandro shifted his weight. He lifted his right foot and set it down firmly across the wooden threshold. The slight creak of the old timber sounded like a gunshot in the quiet room.

The woman in the blue velvet gown flinched as if struck. The absolute control she had maintained over his estate, his schedule, and his public narrative for years dissolved entirely in that single motion. Her jaw tightened, her lips pressing into a hard, bloodless line as the terrifying reality set in: the man she had managed, predicted, and quietly sidelined was walking away from her authority on his own two feet.

"You're making a mistake," she hissed, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper as she stepped back toward the open front door, her designer heels clicking sharply against the wood. "The foundation won't support this. The press won't understand. You'll destroy everything we built."

"We built nothing," Alessandro replied calmly, taking a second step forward. "You built a cage."

The physician didn't wait to hear more. He turned sharply on his heel, casting one final, disbelieving glance at Alessandro's legs before practically bolting through the doorway toward the waiting sedan idling in the gravel drive.

The woman lingered for one breathless second longer, her diamond necklace catching the dim hallway light as she glared past Alessandro toward where I stood quietly by the hallway table. Her eyes burned with a mixture of fury and sudden, bitter defeat. Without another word, she turned on her heel, her blue velvet gown rustling sharply, and followed the doctor out into the afternoon air.

The heavy front door swung shut behind them, latching with a solid, final click.

Through the tall glass sidelights, we watched the brake lights of the luxury sedan flare red against the gray gravel. The engine roared to life, tires spitting loose stones as the vehicle reversed sharply down the drive and disappeared around the curve of the coastal road, leaving behind only the steady, rhythmic sound of the tide rolling against the shore.
