Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Ethan Moreau had never wanted to work for the family company.
He loved machines.
Engineering.
The quiet satisfaction of solving problems that did not involve shareholders, inheritance, or arguments about who deserved credit.
At nineteen, he was studying mechanical engineering at MIT.
His father wanted him to join Moreau Holdings.
His uncle encouraged him to follow his own path.
Ethan had always loved Julien for that.
Now he was sitting inside a locked room, staring at a man who claimed to be protecting him.
The man introduced himself as Mr. Cross.
He wore a gray suit.
His voice was calm.
And he had not allowed Ethan to leave for nearly twelve hours.
“Your father is involved in a difficult situation,” Cross said.
Ethan stared at him.
“Then call the police.”
“We're trying to avoid unnecessary complications.”
“You kidnapped me.”
Cross smiled faintly.
“That's an unfortunate word.”
“What would you call it?”
“A temporary arrangement.”
Ethan looked toward the locked door.
“My uncle will find me.”
Cross's smile disappeared.
“Your uncle should have stayed dead.”
Ethan felt a chill.
“What?”
Cross stood.
“You should rest.”
He walked out.
The lock clicked.
Ethan waited until the footsteps faded.
Then he reached beneath the mattress.
His phone had been confiscated.
But his smartwatch remained hidden inside the lining of his shoe.
It had limited connectivity.
And its battery was nearly dead.
He activated an emergency message.
Typed three words.
Help. Locked inside.
Then he sent the location data.
The screen went black.
### 5:41 p.m.
Reeves received the alert through Ethan's emergency contact system.
The location pointed to an industrial property outside Providence.
Federal agents and local police began coordinating a rescue.
Julien wanted to go.
Reeves refused.
“You're a target.”
“That's my nephew.”
“And sending you into a hostage situation won't help him.”
Julien paced the room.
“Whitcomb is using a nineteen-year-old boy to control his father.”
“Yes.”
“And Antoine knows where Olivia is.”
“Possibly.”
Julien stopped.
“Then we need both of them alive.”
Reeves nodded.
“That's the plan.”
Sophie approached her father.
“Ethan is smart.”
“I know.”
“He'll find a way to help.”
Julien looked at her.
“You sound very certain.”
She smiled sadly.
“He learned from you.”
### The rescue
At 7:12 p.m., officers surrounded the industrial property.
Inside, Ethan heard distant voices.
Then footsteps.
Cross entered the room.
“Get up.”
Ethan remained seated.
“Why?”
“We're leaving.”
“Where?”
“Now.”
Cross grabbed his arm.
Ethan pulled away.
A loud command sounded outside.
“Police! Show your hands!”
Cross froze.
Then reached inside his jacket.
Ethan reacted instinctively.
He shoved a metal chair between them.
Cross stumbled.
The door burst open.
Officers entered.
“Hands where we can see them!”
Cross hesitated.
Then dropped the weapon he had drawn.
Ethan collapsed against the wall.
An officer approached.
“Are you hurt?”
Ethan shook his head.
“Where's my dad?”
“We'll get you somewhere safe.”
“Is my uncle alive?”
“Yes.”
Ethan began crying.
For the first time in twelve hours, he believed he might survive.
### The truth about Olivia
With Ethan rescued, Antoine finally agreed to provide a full statement.
He told Reeves that Olivia Grant had discovered evidence connecting Whitcomb to fraudulent acquisitions and financial coercion.
She had also uncovered something more disturbing.
Whitcomb had been using private security contractors to intimidate witnesses.
When Olivia threatened to expose the operation, she was abducted.
Antoine claimed he had helped arrange her transportation to a remote property.
But he insisted he had not known she would be held there.
Reeves asked for the location.
Antoine provided an address.
A farmhouse in rural Vermont.
“Is she still alive?” Reeves asked.
Antoine looked down.
“I don't know.”
“Who was responsible?”
“Cross.”
“The man holding your son?”
Antoine nodded.
Reeves stood.
“We'll investigate immediately.”
Antoine reached across the table.
“Please.”
Reeves stopped.
“What?”
“Tell Julien I'm sorry.”
Reeves studied him.
“You can tell him yourself when the time comes.”
Antoine began crying.
“I don't think he'll ever speak to me again.”
Reeves did not answer.
Some wounds could not be repaired with apologies.
### The farmhouse
Investigators arrived at the Vermont property shortly after midnight.
The house appeared abandoned.
Windows were boarded.
The driveway was overgrown.
Inside, officers found an empty bedroom.
A broken chair.
Medical supplies.
And a notebook hidden beneath a loose floorboard.
The notebook belonged to Olivia Grant.
Its pages contained dates, account numbers, and names.
But the final entry was the most important.
Written in hurried handwriting were seven words.
IF I DISAPPEAR, FIND THE BLUE LEDGER.
Beneath the sentence was a location.
The address of a private bank in Zurich.
May you like
And a name.
Camille Moreau.
