Chapter 1: The Valenti Crest

The afternoon light filtered through the sheer curtains of the bridal suite, casting long, pale stripes across the carpet and turning the air a dusty gold. Outside, the distant murmur of guests drifting toward the reception pavilion sounded like static against the glass, muffled and unreal. My white wedding dress, off-the-shoulder and heavy with layers of silk, felt suddenly restrictive against my skin. I stood still, breathing in the scent of white roses and stale champagne, watching him.

He stood close, too close, his dark hair falling slightly across his forehead over a face shadowed by morning stubble. The white button-down shirt he wore was unbuttoned at the collar, the cuffs rolled up to reveal the dark ink of tattoos across his hand—a complex weave of lines I had barely noticed during the whirlwind of the ceremony, but which now seemed to anchor him to the dim room with terrifying solidity. His eyes were wide and fixed, staring intently downward with a dark, unblinking intensity that made my chest tighten. In his right hand, the small metallic winged pendant caught what little light managed to slip past the lace.

I looked down, following his gaze to my right shoulder. The skin there was bare, smooth, and marked only by the dark, intricate ink of a winged tattoo that matched the shape of the metal object in his hand with impossible precision. A cold prickle of adrenaline washed over me, chasing away the warmth of the day.

"What is that?" I whispered, my voice barely louder than the rustle of the sheer curtains in the breeze.

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, his hand rose slowly, deliberately, bringing the metallic winged pendant close to my shoulder tattoo. As the cold metal neared the ink, a faint, pale luminescence seemed to bleed from the edges of the pendant, casting a subtle glow against my skin as the two shapes aligned down to the millimeter. The air between us felt charged, humming with a frequency that made my teeth ache.

"What is that?" I asked again, the tremor in my voice refusing to hide behind the polite veneer of a bride on her wedding day.

The man's face hardened, his jaw clenching as the last traces of confusion vanished from his features, replaced by a cold, heavy realization. The tension in the room snapped taut, stretching every nerve until the silence between us felt deafening.

"The Valenti crest," he said.

I pulled back, turning my head sharply to look up at him in sudden, stunned disbelief. He didn't move. He held the pendant steady, his fingers locked around the chain, a man waiting for a storm he had known was coming all along. We stood locked in a tense standoff in the dimness of the suite, the distant music from the lawn fading into absolute nothingness.
