Chapter 8 - The Stairwell Escape

The emergency alarm began its harsh, rhythmic wailing just past two in the morning, cutting through the silent hospital corridor like a knife. Red strobe lights flashed against the pale green walls, casting long, frantic shadows across the hallway floor.

At the nursing station, the night supervisor scrambled for the intercom, but before she could speak, two men in identical black suits pushed past the double doors from the emergency stairwell. Their heavy wool overcoats were damp from the rain, and their hands rested ominously beneath their jackets. They weren't hospital security; they were part of the private detail the sister had retained before her arrest—men whose loyalties didn't dissolve just because their primary employer was sitting in a holding cell.

Inside Room 714, I heard the heavy boots on the linoleum floor before they reached the doorway.

"Julian, get up," I whispered urgently, tossing his dark wool coat across the bed. "They're here."

Julian didn't hesitate. The weeks of paralysis had left his muscles stiff, but adrenaline surged through his frame as he threw off the hospital blankets and swung his legs over the side of the bed. He pulled the coat over his shoulders, his bearded jaw set with hard, uncompromising resolution. "The service elevator at the end of the hall is locked down, but the laundry chute maintenance stairwell is right past the linen closet."

Before we could reach the door, it swung wide open. One of the suited men stepped into the room, his eyes locking instantly onto Julian. "Mr. Vance. Let's not make this difficult. The board wants you relocated to a private facility."

"Get out of my way," Julian growled, stepping forward with an intimidating physical presence that made the guard flinch despite his weapon.

When the guard reached out to grab Julian's arm, I didn't think; I grabbed the heavy metal IV pole from beside the bed and swung it hard against the doorframe, shattering the plastic regulator assembly and creating an immediate physical barrier. The metal clang echoed down the corridor as Julian slammed his shoulder into the guard's chest, sending him crashing backward into his partner.

"Move!" I yelled, grabbing Julian's hand and pulling him toward the open stairwell door as the alarm shrieked overhead.
