Chapter 11 - THE FIANCÉE WHO HAD ONE LAST SECRET“I didn't take your mother to hurt her, Luca. I took her because my father was going to kill her.”

Vanessa Bellini stood inside an abandoned lakeside cottage outside Milwaukee, holding a phone with both hands.
Her evening gown was gone.
She wore jeans, a dark sweater, and a coat that looked borrowed.
Her makeup had washed away.
For the first time since I'd met her, she looked less like a woman born into wealth and more like someone who had been running for her life.
Luca listened from the hospital conference room.
Detective Mercer was on the line.
David sat beside him.
I stood near the window.
“Where's my mother?” Luca asked.
Vanessa swallowed.
“She's here.”
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
“Let me speak to her.”
Vanessa looked toward someone outside the camera frame.
Then she nodded.
A few seconds later, an older woman appeared.
Thin.
Gray-haired.
Wearing a pale blue cardigan.
Her face carried the exhaustion of years spent waiting.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
Luca's eyes.
Isabella's eyes.
Lucia Moretti stared at the screen.
Then covered her mouth.
“My boy.”
Luca stopped breathing.
For twenty-two years, he had imagined what he would say if he could speak to his mother one more time.
He had imagined telling her about his businesses.
His accomplishments.
The man he'd become.
Now he couldn't remember a single one of those things.
“Mom?”
Lucia nodded through her tears.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
He covered his face.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
“I buried you.”
Her expression collapsed.
“Oh, Luca.”
He struggled to breathe.
“Why didn't you come home?”
“I tried.”
The words were barely audible.
“I tried every year.”
Luca shook his head.
“I looked for you in my dreams.”
Lucia began crying harder.
“I never stopped thinking about you.”
For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.
Then Luca whispered:
“We found Bella.”
Lucia froze.
“What?”
“Isabella. She's alive. She's here.”
The older woman made a sound I would never forget.
It wasn't quite a cry.
It wasn't quite a laugh.
It was the sound of a mother learning that a child she'd feared losing forever was still alive.
“My baby?”
Luca nodded.
“She's safe.”
Lucia pressed a trembling hand against her chest.
“Can I see her?”
Luca looked at Dr. Carter, who had just entered the room.
The doctor nodded.
“We can ask Isabella. Let her choose.”
Luca turned back to the screen.
“Mom, we're going to make sure you both have the chance.”
Lucia smiled through her tears.
Then the camera shifted back to Vanessa.
“Now you understand why I couldn't tell you.”
Luca's expression hardened.
“No.”
Her smile disappeared.
“You still signed the transfer order.”
“I know.”
“You ordered Emma to destroy the box.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe I was marrying someone who loved me.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I did love you.”
Luca stared at her.
“Then you should've trusted me with the truth.”
Vanessa began crying.
“My father threatened my younger brother.”
Luca said nothing.
“He's twenty-four. He has a wife and a baby. My father said they would disappear if I didn't cooperate.”
Luca closed his eyes.
Another threat.
Another family.
Another person forced into silence.
Vanessa continued.
“I signed the transfer order because he told me Isabella was being moved to another medical facility.”
“And you believed him?”
“No.”
The honesty surprised him.
She wiped her face.
“I wanted to. But I knew something was wrong.”
“Then why didn't you stop it?”
“Because I was a coward.”
The room fell silent.
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“I spent my whole life thinking my father was a powerful man who protected our family. I didn't realize that every beautiful thing we owned had been purchased with someone else's suffering.”
She swallowed.
“And when I finally understood, I was already part of it.”
Luca studied her.
He could hear regret.
Maybe even love.
But regret didn't erase the signed document.
And love didn't make betrayal harmless.
“What do you want from me?” he asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Nothing.”
“Then why call?”
“Because I'm done protecting him.”
She looked toward Lucia.
“My father ordered her moved tonight. I got to her first.”
“How?”
“Someone inside the facility helped me. She was hidden in an unused rehabilitation wing, separate from Isabella.”
Luca frowned.
“Who helped you?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Rachel's supervisor. A woman named Dr. Helen Morris.”
David immediately wrote down the name.
Vanessa continued.
“She gave me evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“Files. Contracts. Payment records.”
Luca looked at David.
The attorney leaned forward.
“Vanessa, we need you to preserve everything and speak directly with investigators.”
She nodded.
“I will.”
“Where are you?” Detective Mercer asked.
Vanessa glanced at the window.
“Near Lake Geneva.”
“Give me the address.”
She hesitated.
Then read it aloud.
Caroline began coordinating a safe pickup and medical assistance.
But before the call ended, Luca asked one final question.
“Why did you really want the sewing box destroyed?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I knew about the keys.”
“Who told you?”
“My father.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
Luca stared at her.
“The same time you signed Isabella's transfer order.”
She nodded.
“He told me the box had been found during renovations at your mansion.”
“Found by whom?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Salvatore.”
Luca went still.
His uncle had found the box.
Then given it to Vanessa to destroy.
The entire engagement dinner had nearly become the perfect occasion to erase the last pieces of evidence.
Vanessa continued.
“But I didn't know there was a recording inside.”
Luca frowned.
“Then who put it there?”
She shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Lucia suddenly spoke from behind her.
“I do.”
Everyone froze.
Vanessa turned the camera.
Lucia looked directly at Luca.
“There was a woman who worked at St. Catherine's. She smuggled out my tapes and promised to hide them somewhere you might eventually find.”
Luca leaned closer.
“Who?”
Lucia whispered:
“Her name was Eleanor.”
I felt the room tilt.
Eleanor.
My mother's name.
My mother, who had died when I was nineteen.
My mother, whose old recipe cards I still kept in a kitchen drawer.
I stared at the screen.
“Eleanor Sullivan?”
Lucia's eyes widened.
She leaned closer.
“Emma?”
My throat closed.
“How do you know my name?”
Lucia covered her mouth.
Then whispered something that made my knees go weak.
May you like
“Your mother saved my life.”
